it's not silly at all. think about it. it divides an entire nation. people fight and kill each other over this "word". stand anywhere in america and shout it out. it's incendiary. there's no reason to use it.

I think it should be used so much it loses the stigma, but I'm a straight white male, so my opinion doesn't really matter in discussions like this.

Words mean things. It's not silly.

This word wasn't used merely as a taunt or childish prattle.

This word was used to subjugate an entire race of people.

This word was used not only to justify the abuse and murder of people for such crimes as looking at a white woman, acting uppity or just generally not knowing their place in society. It was also to nullify any attempts at punishing even the most vile offenders.

If you think that should just be wished away with the wave of a wand because it's "silly", then you really aren't as liberal as you like to preach.

I agree with all of that, but the point is you can't reference the word. Not that the word is silly. I think there is a difference. But of course as the senator said I'm straight and white, and probably should get out of this discussion

I think you can reference all you want as long as you do so with a certain sensitivity. And if your audience takes offense, take your lumps and move on. I have no problem saying it in proper context and necessity. Otherwise it needs to go the way of "dungarees".
