I really don't think anything I listen to would really surprise anyone.

I don't know what people's perception of my music taste is, and I really don't care. I like what I like. *shrug*

I don't think it's a big surprise but I'll list a few:

Bay City Rollers
Turbo Negro
Dwight Yoakum
Backyard Babies
Paul Oakenfold (early stuff -- don't tell my dance crew about this!!) :)

Shocked or not shocked, but it is fairly well documented that I'm attempting to amass the most digusting library of shitty pop hits from the 1970s. Right now the list is around 4000+ songs and going strong, including multiple tracks by the likes of...Sugarloaf.

"Green Eyed Lady" , "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You", or both?

How about "Green Eyed Lady", "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" and "Stars In Our Eyes"?

Noone on this board knows me very well, except maybe bitterbuffalo, but my friends and family would be very surprised to hear what I've been playing lately---country music.

I've been a pretty harsh critic of the genre, but thanks to a few folks here, and another board that I frequent, I've been exposed to some damn good stuff---Lee Hazlewood, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine.

If you haven't heard this album, go get it now: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 00-4517452

You can thank me (and billy g) later.

A friend of mine put "Summer Wine" on a comp for me -- I thought "Some Velvet Morning" was a freak occurence of a really good tune put out by (otherwise) really cheesy people, and have since admitted that I was wrong.

Oh, yeah, Hazlewood writes his share of cheese, but it's some damn fine cheese.

Yeah, I listen to everything (except freakin' Belle & Sebastian!!!) so I don't think people really have an idea of how my tastes sway.

I will say that Billzebub has surprised me a bunch of times. Just when I think I've got him pegged as a indie snob, never heard of any of the shit he listens to, everything after 1979 sucks douchebag, I find out he's been listening to ________ and I'm forced to reevaluate.

But what is life without surprises.

I was going to start a thread that is titled 'People's NPs who consistently impress/intrigue you" with you as the main one. Always have an interesting and wide ranging bunch of albums.

That would have been a good topic too. Although, I wouldn't have known who to start with. Plenty of people here who's taste I respect.

I'm not just trying to repay the compliment but you got me to break out a bunch of my country albums which I hadn't listened to in ages.

Your buddy Chris seems so open-minded about his music that it's kind of hard to recall him saying something that he didn't like

Despite what I said in the earlier post-Billzebub, Radcliffe, FrostingSpoon, Fractured Take, PopTodd, Sketch and a bunch of others always impress or get me curious.

This tribute album by the likes of Evan Dando, Tindersticks, Erlend Oye, etc. is very good stuff.

Other than the version of Sand by I forget who, it's full of good shit. Hazlewood provides comments to each song in the liner notes, and he was trying to be polite about the arrangement of Sand by saying something like "Those horns. That's, uh...interesting."

The best way to get into classical music is to pick up one of those compilations that have the pieces you already (whether you realize it or not) know. You'll be amazed by how much you already know from movies, tv, commercials, hell, even Bugs Bunny.

Once you find a composer that does it for you, delve a bit deeper into their major works and you'll be off and running (hopefully not away).

Two years ago, I knew shit about the blues, but I'm fairly knowledgable now. I even hang out at a well known blues joint down here occasionally. Although, not during the summer. That place is a friggin' oven.

For what it's worth, here's ten classical pieces everyone should own:

Beethoven: Symphony #9
Beethoven: Symphony #5
Dvorak: Symphony #9 (The New World)
Mahler: Symphony #1 (The Titan)
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique
Debussy: La Mer
Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition
Holst: The Planets
Tchaikovsky: Overture 1812
Borodin: Polovtsian Dances

Other stuff you should be able to get by with highlights compilations: Mozart, Wagner, Copland, Bach, Ravel, Handel, Strauss, etc.

I listen to a French classical music internet radio station, mainly because I can't understand what the DJs are saying.

No way! I listen to Into the Great Wide Open quite often. One of my favorite albums, as a matter of fact.
