S/K is one of the bands that I have kept buying because... well, I wanna be cool and cutting edge and retr0-edgy and I wanna have flannels and live with cynical dykes in the pacific northwest. It's a long story. But there has been always something in their music that seems on the verge of being really good.

So I ALWAYS respect their work and NEVER, EVER play it... never choose to play it after about 3-4 listens in the first month.

I wasn't gonna buy this, even given its high place on the indie charts... and hoping my mature years had finally gotten me beyond the need for flannel and dykes (it's a long story), but per the postings on this thread I'll get it... but you better be right. I am a refugee from CMJ and I have been less than happy about the CD's this board has made me buy. Grumble. Or perhaps grrr.

chill son...nobody tells anybody to buy records around here, some people just suggest some things more emphatically than others.

if you already own the rest of the catalog and felt like taking a chance on the rest of them, why not take the chance here to hear what is probably their best and most confident sounding record?

if you end up being disappointed in it i'll paypal you a dollar or something.

edit: nevermind that, i don't have money to hand out

I usually like S/K's music, but the menstrual yelping can be pretty hard to take.

I wouldnt call my man Harry "son" Chase; that dudes got suits older than you. And because he is a little older and not wiling away his days playing video games and wasting his parents money, he might actually enjoy some of the free advice thrown out by a like minded group of people.

Plus, dude is one of my favorite posters.

So keep your shit in context, boy. And respect your godamn elders.

thanks for the tips...

but i really think you're off base here. and yes, i may be 19 years old and in some minds that may invalidate my opinion, but i'm going to go ahead and voice it anyway.

his post was basically a talk-down to the entire community and had a hint of pretensiousness (sp) to it. for example:

Quote:

The CDs this board has "made [him] buy"? I don't think it gets any more ridiculous than that on this message board...trying to blame the over-enthusiasm of others for bad purchases? i mean, we've all made a wrens-esque mistake over the years, but i don't take that out on all the people who love that album, i take it out on myself for trusting them.

and furthermore, i really take offense to this:

Quote:
And because he is a little older and not wiling away his days playing video games and wasting his parents money, he might actually enjoy some of the free advice thrown out by a like minded group of people.

because you have no idea what you're talking about. i work (at least) 40 hour weeks every week. the only thing my parents help me out on is my tuition and that's not even a large amount. during school i take (at least) 17 hours of classes and work (at least) thirty hours a week.

it happens to be summer vacation, so i splurged twenty dollars of my own money on fifa 2005 and played it a lot on an off day. i haven't touched the thing in three days, mainly because i've been working 10 hours a day and on holidays.

maybe you think i shouldn't tell harry not to blame other people for his bad music purchases...that's okay i guess.

but don't accuse me of "wasting my parents [sic] money," because just about the only thing they provide me is a roof over my head. but i bet you were living in a cardboard box on the streets of hotlanta supporting yourself when you were twelve.

as if i have even have to justify any of that to you.

in summation....

chill son. you don't have to get your cousin's back every time somebody says anything to him. if he's got suits older than me, i'm sure he can handle himself.

I don't have much to add, but I just wanted to point out that the above post from cmanhatan4 is one of the best, most unfuckwithable posts I've ever seen on any message board.

I don't mean to single out Harry (who I respect), but no one here is "making" you buy any CDs. With all of file sharing services available, it's easy to preview most albums before making a purchase. Even if you choose to go the legal route, Amazon and band websites typically provide free sound clips or whole MP3s. While it's not always possible to find MP3s for all bands out there, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that most Obner recommendations shouldn't be too hard to track down.

I'm glad harry wrote that to be taken 100% literally, otherwise some mental giants could have overreacted.

I'm glad too. Unlike in "real life," sarcasm is often difficult to detect on the internet.

I want to have Elvis Fu's babies.

No you don't. Your nursing times would interfere with board game night.

i realize that he was being (at least) partially sarcastic, and that's why i said "chill son"...sthg that is usually very sarcastic when it comes out of my mouth. yail took it upon himself to overreact and i couldn't not play the game...it's in my blood.

Elvis Fu - Men are not capable of giving birth. See, I was just kidding!

Oh, and I appreciate you taking the time to review my previous posts to unearth a picture for a reply that was neither funny nor scathing. Oh no! I enjoy spending time with my friends doing things I enjoy! That's terrible!

gave this some more serious listening today, and it's only getting better in my mind. i'm starting to not let the shrieking get to me as much and am appreciating the lyrics a lot more than on previous releases of theirs...and "modern girl" is absolutely beautiful and amazing. that song fills me with hope and emotion like no song has in a long time.

i have only heard and only owned "all hands on the Bad one" before this and i completely agree with the love

This is at the top of my list for the year, tied with M. Ward.

They have taken a big leap up. Thier riffs are angular in sound, dirtier, lots of dissonance, and the guitar and base parts feed off of each other and help build texture, rather than just playing the same line. The lyircs are not dykish yelling to me. the lyrics are weird and different from the other songs i've heard, more story based than emotive. "Waht's mine is yours" kicks my ass every time i hear it. It may get annoying at times, but corin tucker has pipes, and you can't take that away from her. Also i'm in love with anything Janet Weiss does. I'm a huge fan of Quasi, and her drumming here is just as interesting as on those records. Fridman deserves a lot of credit too. I saw them play a lot of these songs live on new years eve when they openned for the flaming lips and wilco. while they were great to hear then, they just explode off of the record when you play it. I'd recommend it if you're impressed with sleater kinney (as i have been in the past). if you've been so-so, then lay off and borrow it from somebody.

1. Classic tailoring, a quality fabric, a muted color... those suckers, if cared for, can last 20-30 years.

2. Don't keep ties. That never works.

3. Have listened to S/K twice now. I am not feeling it.

4. Stop, wait, oh mama, can this really be the end? They are twisting my arm, oh ouch, please, please don't make me...shit!.... they just forced me to buy Illinois...now they are pushing me to Okkervill River....help!!

i've listened to a lot but wouldn't consider myself that huge a fan...i have call the doctor, hot rock, all hands on the bad one, one beat...i'm forgetting one and i don't think i've ever heard the first self-titled one. i've seem them live twice, but for the first time in 2003. i'd consider myself fairly well-versed in their stuff.

hmm. I think lyrically they've done better, but overall the new one is a solid package. it's at least better than their last record, which was fucking abysmal.
