It's going to be crazy, like a whole new league. I can't wait to see who ends up where and if all the teams end up sticking around.

i'm sofa king excited for this. announcing a deal right now is perfect because from now til opening day theres going to be so much stuff going on in the league, draft lottery, all the buyouts of contracts, an unprecedented free agency period, the draft, and finally THE SEASON BEGINS!

i'm loving that as far as being prepared for the new cba with players under contract, the bruins are at the top of the list

as far as shootouts, its ok as long as it doesnt happen in the playoffs

Yes & No. I'm a Bruins fan so I've been waiting for a salary cap knowing it's the only way Jacobs would put a winner on the ice. But it's the Bruins so I'm scared they'll find a way to fuck it up. The potential to build a great team is there but Thorton is unhappy & they have to sign a ton of players. Anytime you bring in that many new faces chemistry becomes such a key issue & anytime your franchise player is upset that's not good. I hope they get Murray back.

Team by team rundown of contract situations

My Sabres look to be in great shape. Can't wait to see them pounding the snot out of the Leafs again.

Yeah the Rangers. I thought he was going back to Sweden & was okay with it, but to stay in the NHL & sign with the Rangers that just pissed me off. They desperately need Gonchar or else you're giving a ton of ice time to McGillis & Sleger since they're so thin offensively on the B-line. That PP hasn't been the same since Allison was dealt & getting a 60 point a season defenceman is a step in the right direction.

So, my husband and I were talking about the new rules last night. He played a while back (he was a goalie-- who else would I have married?) and was not real pleased with the restricted goalie play area. Now I'm no hockey expert, but is this rule basically saying the goalie has to play the puck either in front or in the trapezoidal section behind the net ONLY? If so, that seems retarded. Explain to me how this is supposed to improve the game.

He felt like it severely limited the goalie's abilities to assist his own team.

Personally I think this is gonna be the best rule change. Allows the opposition to get a forecheck going. If you get a great puck handling goalie like Brouder he almost becomes a 3rd defenceman. He can grab a puck as it's shot in & move it up to a defenceman. It makes it really hard for the opposition to get an attack going. This way a defenceman has to come in & fetch it & face an onslaught of forechecking forwards who aren't being held up in the neutral zone. It's gonna make the game a lot more exciting. It kind of a waste to have a game that's so physical & then all of a sudden a guy no one can touch can run out & grab the puck.

I think they should get rid of the trapezoid and let the goalies play wherever they want...But they become fair game....

Seriously, I watched the shit out of that Center Ice preview last night and just started again. After the Sox game became too tedious, I just channel-surfed all of the games. SOOOOOO GOOD having hockey back.

Not too sure how I'm feeling about the shoot-out, having now watched one go down (Leafs & Sens). I've always liked the idea in theory...But, I do like the legal 2-line pass.

Also, what's with this "no slashing/breaking an opposing player's stick" rule? Tough luck and stuff, right? It's like, I dunno, a peewee league rule.

The trouble with the shoot-out is it's not hockey and entails deciding a game by playing a different game. They may as well break the tie with lawn darts.

How is it not hockey? Penalty shots have been part of the game for as long as I've been a fan.

Agreed; its just as much hockey as this four on four sham (not to mention "Regulated Ties" (lol)) that they've been offering up.

ice hockey: a game played on an ice rink by two opposing teams of six skaters each who try to knock a flat round puck into the opponents' goal with angled sticks

shoot-out: a means of resolving a tie after overtime, in which players from each side alternately take individual shots on a goal defended by a goalie.

Any other questions?

Whoops Wayne

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Wayne Gretzky committed the first major mistake of his NHL coaching career against his old team, and nearly got away with it.

The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night, Gretzky's second loss in as many nights behind the bench.

The rookie coach was responsible for a mixup in Phoenix's lineup at the start of the game. Right wing Fredrik Sjostrom was on the ice despite being listed as a scratch.

Los Angeles coach Andy Murray knew it and even double-checked the rule book, but had planned on keeping quiet unless Phoenix scored with Sjostrom on the ice, which would have nullified the goal.

But the Kings' stat crew noticed Sjostrom and alerted referees, who ruled Sjostrom ineligible for the rest of the game. Phoenix center Petr Nedved was the actual scratch, but he was listed as being available.

A subdued Gretzky called it an oversight that was ``just inexcusable.''

``It's my responsibility,'' he said. ``It just was utter nonsense that it happened and I feel bad for Freddie and I feel bad for the team. It happened and it won't happen again.''

Murray downplayed Gretzky's rookie mistake, saying, ``It happens all the time. I'm sure it's happened to me before.''

Murray said he would have rather had a goal nullified than have the Coyotes lose a player.

``We didn't want to call it until we needed it,'' he said. ``But unfortunately, the guys upstairs were doing their job and they realized they had the wrong guy.''

As coach, Gretzky signs the lineup sheet before the game. Murray empathized with Gretzky, saying he has an assistant fill out the lineup and double-check it before he signs.

``I mean, you're so used to writing the same names down,'' Murray said. ``I'm afraid I might make that mistake.''

I watched the 1st period of that game...When they told Gretzky, He kinda laughed..But pointed to Tocchet, who is the assistant and sort of responsible for the card..Tocchet looked really pissed that he f-d up...

When Sjostrom left the bench to go back to the dressing room he threw his stick and it looked like he was going to cry...Pretty funny..

No, but I'm guessing you probably complained when they got rid of the rover too.
