When success in some marketing gimmick become necessary to be dunk champion. How many busted backboards does L'il Ole Spud have under his belt?

what's the title of the thread? learn how to read.

your obstinance in being difficult aside, backboards or no backboards, i'd take some of the timing dunks that spud did in 86 over dawkins in terms of the difficulty in getting a man 5'7" that high at the right time. seriously sick shit.

it's the same reason that david thompson wasn't amongst the choices (who was also a better dunker than dawkins but would have a place in the argument. by your logic shaq should be up there).

Well, then the poll should have been more specific. If it's narrowed down to the All-Star Game sideshow participants, then, I concur, Spud's the choice.

Why did this become so damned difficult??????????? This is *not* the stress I need on Friday morning.

MJ, but Webb got my vote based on athletic/fly-ability.

I still have my Brooks-sponsored 'Nique poster tacked to the wall. Is he still playing in Europe? Last time he was in front of the camera, he looked like a bloated old man. S. Kemp times 5.

Favorite players, people?

I like D-Wade, but the addition of Shaq drops his stock. He doesn't have to work nearly as hard to get to the bucket. Stevie Nash is always a fav, and I love mouthy Artest for his nasty defensive play & sagittal keel - craziest head in all franchised sport. Nets' Jefferson is a pretty likable player, too.

god i hope that he's not still playing. last time i saw him he was dunking a tostito on bill walton and emabarassing everyone. i bet that gerald still lives in his spare room. 'Nique was such a hero when i was a kid that it was so sad to watch him ride the pine for the celtics and then move to greece. i don't understand it. i had that same poster, i'll bet.

COME ON PEOPLE!!

Nique isn't called the Human Highlight for nothing.

I'm a Hawks fan and if you ignore the "novelty" of Spud, Nique kills him.

I mean the man did a reverse jam where he brought the ball down to his knees and jammed all in the air and did it with much more flair. I think people put too much into the fact that Spud was actually dunking. Nique had much more style and that's what the dunk contest is anyway.

I think he was just as creative as Spud also.

whoever voted for Kobe probably did it for the wrong kind of "slammed the ball into the basket" activity...

but i think that 'nique did things that we'd seen (the aforementioned thomson and dawkins, for example) and would see again (i propose that young shawn kemp had at least comproable athletic ability for the power dunks, as did young VC), just better. I've still never seen anything close to the show that spud put on that one night in 1986, except MAYBE for some of AI at georgetown and that time that kevin johnson dunked on hakeem.

i mean, i voted for 'nique too, but it's an arguable point.

The most exciting contest was Spud for sure. That was back when people cared about the dunk contest. Now the NBA is just a bunch of guys who can ONLY dunk. The guys now are certainly doing spectacular things but it's lost some of it's appeal when the majority of the league can't hit an open 15 footer to save thier lives. Witness the beatdown Argentina gave us in the Olympics. Not that I want to see games that are jump shot contests but watching another 72-68 NBA game is getting tedious. Seriously, I like basketball but I don't know how a person could make it through a whole game.

What about CEDRIC CEBALLOS!

Also, Chase. Add that John Starks dunk on the baseline to best little guy dunks.
