PKDick wrote his novels as though they were really long short stories.

I'm with the Cap'n on this, particular the metaphorical dog-shit-scold part. Is your creative brain so fucking out there with the What-Does-It-All-Means that you're willing to join some dumb cult to attain some spiritual homeostasis? Why? I'll never understand these creative types. I'm not going to say that it's going to make me spin Odelay ever again, but it's got a taint to it. Like when you have a can of beer that's got a slight tinny taste. It makes me enjoy it a little less than a bottle or tap. I'll still have another one sometime, but that taste will inevitably be there when I do.

One of my psych classes in college turned into "why do people join cults?" class. I enjoyed it. We had to write a paper from the point of view of someone who wanted to start a cult. It was kinda of a how to guide on brainwashing from the stuff we learned in class. I digress, but the class illustrated that there is keen difference between cults and religion. Scientology used to really send the professor to the soap box.

I just don't like how they're so secretive. I mean, if your "religion" is so great, why aren't you out there proclaiming the tenets of your beliefs? And I'm not talking about pseudo-intellectual/snore-inducing actor Tom Cruise. Even I pay more attention to the crazy bum on the street corner yelling out his religious beliefs to all the sinners who walk by him without giving him change.

A co-worker told me about a local private school here in Portland where the curriculum included Scientology. Her child was there for a while, and all the parents got an anonymous letter one day informing them that they were preaching Scientology crap during the classes. They clearly didn't advertise that fact in their fact sheet/informational literature for parents. When some of the parents did ask about it, apparently the administration got very nasty, but didn't deny it.

yeah, those scientology drug awareness things are how they get their foot in the door. They certainly know how to get people to listen to them. backrubs for the crew on movies, giving anti-drug talks to kids, $7 mil for sham marriages, free dinners...

shit, why haven't they offered me anything?

I think PKDick may be the exception. His shorts are clever and have punch, but all his really good ideas come from his novels. Which is why every movie based on his work has come from short stories.

'A Scanner Darkly' movie is coming out soon, and that's a novel.

No, because then I would be wrong.

am i overstepping by mentioning that blade runner came from a novel, too?

Heh, that page linked to L. Ron Hubbard's poem he put to music and sang! I think it is the best thing I've heard in ages!

They really oughta put that on the 365 Days Project website.

I thought Bladerunner was based on Philip K Dick's short story, "They Electric Sheep Don't They".

Correct answer: Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? (a short story)

I've had 2 hours to mull over the fact that Beck, too, suckles at L Ron Hoover's teat, and I am left with a bizarre feeling that is equal parts:

A. Meeting a hot chick at a bar, going home with her and seeing a gigantic poster of Rob Thomas on the wall over her bed, and
B. Coming home to find your dog has shat the floor (as in, I wanna rub beck's nose in it and say "what the fuck did you do? WHY DID YOU DO THIS?!?")

The feeling doesn't easily lend itself to words, but this is as close as I can get. I'm not superfan #1 or anything, but until 2 hours ago I kinda respected him. Is Scientology the new Republican/Democrat litmus test for me now?

Oh hell yes. Afer the litany of absolutely retarded and insane crap that I have been reading about scientology, you better believe it's a litmus test.

Yeah, Radcliffe, you're wrong on that one, unless your definition of "short story" stretches beyond 300 pages.

They offer free stress tests in the subway here. I hear they then try to sell you a book.

I think I'll go talk to them one day.
