Orioles got Burnitz. We still need a few more AARP eligible former sluggers, though. Maybe Gorman Thomas needs some cash.

The word "got" there implies there was something worth getting.

Yankees sign Miguel Cairo to a 1 year $1MM contract to fill the utility role. Other than making the official announcement of the Dotel signing, they may be about done. I still wouldn't mind seeing them pick up a good pinch hitter though.

Stormin' Gorman already has a behind-the-bar role with the Brewers, so I doubt he'll be in need of any Angelos green.

Don't sell ol' Jeromy so short. He exhales carbon dioxide, and that's good for plants.

Yeah, I'm supposed to be excited but you know, not having a team that can finish .500 next year kinda zaps me dry. Still, Flanny and co. will point to this as them "doing something positive".

giants keep getting old guys - Matt Morris, Steve Finley, Jose Vizcaino, Mark Sweeney... but addition by subtraction seems to be the main positive - bye bye Alfonzo, Tomko, Snow, Reuter

Hopefully Bonds and Alou get healthy and Winn continues to play like he did for us last season.

Dodged a bullet.

Burnitz is going to Pittsburgh instead of Charm City. How the hell can they fill that void? Someone get Dave Kingman on the phone!

No shit. I was starting to wonder if Flanagan was only interested in signing guys he played for or against.

Word on the street is Storm Davis and Tippy Martinez are also in talks...

Can you imagine the face Miggy made when he read that the deal was off with ol' Jeremy?

From Mlbtraderumors.com by way of orioleshangout.com

Quote:
The latest Manny rumor making the rounds comes courtesy of commenter Wild Bill from the Orioles Hangout Forum. As far as Bill's track record, I can direct you to a thread over at Sons of Sam Horn. According to the poster:

"There are three reputed "insiders" [at Orioles Hangout] and all three seem to agree that the trade has been agreed upon in principal but that Manny's request for an extension will likely cause the deal to fall through. As for their validity, it seems each does have a source either within the Orioles organization or one who is once removed from someone inside.

That said, I don't believe any of them have access to Mike Flanigan or any direct decision maker. The only thing that makes me feel this could be accurate is the fact that all three agree. Generally, they tend to have slightly different takes on the goings on inside the Orioles' FO."

Here's the main point of Wild Bill's post:

"The word is the Tejada-Ramirez/Clement trade has been agreed to in principle by the two teams blocked only at this time with last minute complications caused by Manny."

Using 2005 WARP (Wins Above Replacement Player) values, the net gain for the Red Sox would be -3.6 wins. Meaning that in a vacuum, this trade makes the team worse. Of course, the move would free up significant salary for the Sox (I haven't heard whether money would change hands) so the team would probably make up the difference in value somewhere else.

Manny Ramirez is on the hook for $58MM over the next three seasons. Matt Clement will make $19MM over the next two seasons. Miguel Tejada is owed $48MM over the next four seasons. For the 2006 season only, this trade would free up $18.5MM for the Red Sox.

I'll supply more updates on this trade possibility as I hear them.

Just got off the phone with Dave Kaplan, host of Sports Central on WGN Radio 720 out of Chicago. He gave me the latest on where the Cubs stand with Barry Zito.

Billy Beane is not sure whether he'll deal Zito now or in July. However, the teams have had discussions recently, and the A's like the Cubs' farm system quite a bit. A deal for several of the Cubs' young arms is a distinct possibility. The A's aren't looking for Matt Murton in the trade, but rather pitchers like Rich Hill, Angel Guzman, and Sean Marshall. There's been plenty of debate on this site about Rich Hill's future in the Major Leagues, but it's a fact that many teams absolutely love him and are trying to pry him away from the Cubs. Hill has a ton of trade value. Anyway, sit tight on the Zito idea; nothing's going down today.

Kaplan also mentioned that the Tejada trade is "not dead" for the Cubs. I don't know which names are currently being tossed around, but rest assured the Cubs still have a chance at acquiring him.

I can see the Sox paying part of Manny's contract if this goes through.

Why would the Cubs do this? Ibanez could play LF I guess. Hell, with their ridiculous off season signings so far, this falls in line.

Um...let's see...

Cubs give up Patterson (who has to go anyway) and Ohman (who, at 28, has never really made good)...and get Ibanez (a decent power hitter that would start in LF/bat 5th or 6th to protect Ramirez/Jones and give Murton more time to get acclimated), Graffiano (decent pinch hitter/backup for D.Lee), and Cash.

Seems like they come out the best in this deal...no loss of prospects/ML talent, gain a bopper for LF...

The Orioles want the Tejada deal done soon, and approached the White Sox yesterday with a proposal. The Orioles asked for Jose Contreras, Juan Uribe, Ryan Sweeney, and a top pitching prospect. That unknown prospect may be a sticking point, but it can probably be worked out. My source tells me to look for an announcement by Friday about Tejada, no matter where he ends up.

Sanchez & Schmoll from the Dodgers to the Mets for Seo...

L.A. needed a #4/5 or long pen reliever to keep Edwin Jackson from blowing up in the majors again (I hope we trade that guy sometime soon), and the Sanchez/Schmoll deal is addition by subtraction (creates a spot for madman Broxton in the pen)...

Plus, this keeps Colletti from trading one (or more) of our young arms for David Wells - though I'd love to see him on the mound every 5th day for LA next year, it'd just be for my personal want to see him on the mound every 5th day....

Pretty even...I'll allow it.

I heard this too and was excited until I saw both the Tejada/White Sox trade and Cub/Mariner/Red Sox trade rumors came from mlbtraderumors.com. These guys are approx. 0-145 in their predictions.
