Have you seen Limits of Control?...that movie really got on my nerves, but there were some good performances...Bernal's being one of them, even though it was quite brief.

I saw "How To Train Your Dragon" in 3-D last weekend. The wife won some free passes.
It was pretty awesome. I really recommend checking it out...in 3-D of course.

This was probably the best Dreamworks picture yet.

Key Largo

I know that Tarantino has pilfered old movies to create his movies, but Key Largo seems like the Blueprint for a Tarantino film more than others. A character with the alias "Mr. Brown", mexican stand-offs, a black bag with mysterious contents, A protagonist going through a crisis of self, a resolution of the conflict with everyone getting shot, etc.

Great film. I really enjoyed it.

Serpico. this didn't make much of an impression on me. i found it kinda jumbled and somewhat boring. maybe it's just because every cliche was touched on. also, i read a short article recently about what the real serpico has been up to and he seemed like a really bitter and jaded old man that was out of touch with reality. maybe even that had a little to do with my disinterest in this movie.

Well, even if I didn't really understand it a least I can say that I've seen Last Year at Marienbad. This formalist film primarily focuses on mise-en-scene and editing and cinematography as opposed to plot but the plot is about a man trying to convince a woman at a resort that they had an affair there the year before (she doesn't remember). It was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar in 1963.

Oh, and I also saw Repo Men this past weekend while trying to kill time in Sarasota before a late flight. The other three folks I was with hated it. I probably disliked it to a lesser degree than they did. It was a mindless, blood-filled action flick set in a dystopian future. So, exactly what we were looking for - a time killer.

I was about to go on a rant about how anyone could hate Repo Man but then I realized you said Repo MEN

Last 3 movies watched over about the last month:

Volver. So glad I finally got around to watching this. It never seemed that interesting from the descriptions, but it really was pretty great. I think I need to see more Almodovar, but I'm not sure if I want to watch Bad Education or not.

25th Hour. After seeing a string of great movies, this was a real letdown. I had mostly heard/read good things about it until, just prior to watching it, a friend whose opinions I mostly trust told me it was awful. I didn't think it was that bad, but it never really came together. Each element that seemed like it might develop into something interesting just sort of petered out or was resolved in a really anticlimactic way.

The Bicycle Thief. So after that misstep it was time to watch an undisputed classic, and there you go. Pretty crushing movie. Gonna be queuing up more Italian neorealist films, I think (probably I Viteloni next).

Yeah, I gave it 3 stars on Netflix, but probably closer to 2.5. I can't remember what I wrote about it. I remember being smitten with some of the locations and the always creepy Tilda Swinton, but it was simply ok. Like I said, I'll give anything with them in it a view--and the fact that LoC was directed by Jarmusch didn't hurt.

This reminds me that I have been meaning to see The Bicycle Thief for a few years. Moved up in Netflix behind 8 1/2 (which I've also been meaning to see for years) and In the Loop.

In The Loop has been sitting on top of my tv for like a month. At some point I'll be motivated to watch it.

I still need to re-watch 8 1/2. It was the first Fellini I ever saw, and I think that was a mistake. I didn't really like it, but I really enjoyed La Strada, La Dolce Vita, and Satyricon when I watched them later on. It's so self-referential, I think it's best to see some of Fellini's prior films - and maybe even read up on him a little - before watching it, and I think I want to see a few more of his films, even, before I do go back to it.

This is why I love this thread. I looked this film up and it looks pretty interesting. I'll be hitting my local indie video store in search of it. Thanks.

I was a little meh on it. A little overlong and not quite as funny as it thinks it is.

It succeeds as a satire but it just drug on a little much IMO.

I saw Blood Into Wine. The documentary about Maynard Keenan and Eric Glomski trying to make wine in the unforgiving terroir of Northern Arizona (near Keenan's home of Jerome, AZ).

Page Springs Vineyard & Cellars,Arizona Stronghold,Merkin Vineyards/Caduceus Cellars are the duo's ventures.

It features Tim & Eric interviewing Keenan, which provides some laughs.

RIYL - learning about what goes into winemaking in an untested region, MJ Keenan (Tool, Puscifer, A Perfect Circle), hippies talking about wine and ecology, and Mila Jovavich.

the bicycle thief is one of those movies you watch when you're having a really terrific day and you think, "i'm too happy. i need something to bring me down."

also, i really liked 8 1/2 even as my 2nd or 3rd fellini film.

Interesting. Maybe I will watch La Strada and La Dolce Vita first now.

Yeah. My wife and I had to watch a couple of episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia afterward to cheer us up. It didn't really work, though, because they were Season 2 episodes and they sucked.

Yeah, I just don't think it's a good first one. I'd definitely recommend seeing La Strada or La Dolce Vita first. I think it'd be a good idea to see them both in that order, in fact, before moving onto 8 1/2. La Strada is a really easy movie to like, I think.

The Ghost Writer was excellent, I thought. And, what is up with the hate for A Serious Man? One of the best from last year, IMO.

Going to see Hot Tub Time Machine this weekend.

Yeah, I thought it was great...though I think Double Indemnity almost had the better story line. In terms of production and overall feel of the movie, Out of the Past wins out for me.

Naturally, this is one of my favorite movies of the past decade. Amazing film with great performances.
