Sorry about all this man. Just keep being the dad and the man that you are, and your son will grow up fine. He's smart enough to recognize that you aren't transient, and that you are the real deal. That will shape his worldview of what a man/father is, ultimately. That, and he'll develop a love of cheeseburgers.

It's called a custody hearing, get one.....

Not to be an alarmist, but this is the last custody case in Indiana I read about http://articles.cnn.com/2011-05-22/opin ... PM:OPINION

Is it inappropriate to notify your employer that if he needs to lay someone off that you are the man for the job?

If said person is still currently employed I'd say yes, inappropriate. Maybe not, depending on your job culture, but certainly not tactful.

But, if he gets laid off, I'd say a convo about wanting to step up and take on more responsibility, etc would be appropriate.

Most employers are going to use some objective system to do selections such as seniorityor a skills assessment...or eliminate an entire department or everyone in a certain job title. A lot of emplyers are not going to stray from their system, even for volunteers. Then if you survive you look like uncommitted. If you work for a small company, it night be more flexible, though.

Small company, very small office. The boss and said employee have a friendly/joking relationship that extends beyond work but never outside of work, if that makes sense. The employee is valuable but has made it clear that once their degree was finished they would be moving on and has no intention of making their current position their career nor do they intend on staying at their current place of employment in any long-term sense. The employee has stated to me that they would rather let it be known that if a tough decision has to be made, then to make it with them instead of someone else that needs the job more. It would also afford that employee more time to search for employment in their actual career field that they are attempting to pursue. But, here's the kicker, they can't do it without unemployment benefits and you can't really get unemployment if you just up and quit. Oh well, not my problem, I guess.

I'm sleep deprived and all the hypotheticals, what-ifs, 2nd/3rd person narrative voice and double negatives leave with no clue what the Christ is going on here.

So, in summation: +1

I did try to read that in a Hubie Brown voice, though. That was pretty qual.
