That was Dirty Work that came in a red wrapper. I know, unfortunately, because my purchased copy is still in the red wrapper.

And Caputo - totally agree re: "Sway". Right up there with VU's "Sweet Jane" as a song that I simply cannot hear too many times.

I thought because of the female, that Undercover was obscured as well. Of course I'm basing this on a decades old memory of an album I didn't buy and remember because of the stupid cover that wasn't even that interesting to pick up and get a closer look.

Dirty Work was in a red wrapper because even the cover is TOO FUCKING EMBARRASSING to be seen in public.

I LOVE don't like "Undercover of the Night" ...something about the bass and the grove and the build to the chorus has just always struck me as completely fucking awesome. Staggering even.

"Pretty Beat Up" is a pretty tight jam as well.

Actually, aside from "She Was Hot", this album works for me: At this moment in history, artists from the Stones generation were putting out arguably some of the worst written, worst produced music in history--this is at least passably interesting.

On second listen, "She Was Hot" is pretty great too--is this the last album Ian Stewart played on?

It's definitely one of the few post-'70s Stones songs to have gotten better with age.

Quote:
Reuniting after three years and one solo album from Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones attempted to settle their differences and craft a comeback with Dirty Work, but the tensions remained too great for the group. Designed as a return to their rock & roll roots after several years of vague dance experiments, Dirty Work is hampered by uneven songs and undistinguished performances, as well as a slick, lightly synthesized production that instantly dates the album to the mid-'80s. Jagger often sounds like he's saving his best work for his solo records, but a handful of songs have a spry, vigorous attack -- "One Hit (To the Body)" is a classic, and "Winning Ugly" and "Had It With You" have a similar aggression. Still, most of Dirty Work sounds as forced as the cover of Bob & Earl's uptown soul obscurity "Harlem Shuffle," leaving the album as one of the group's most undistinguished efforts.

You're joking on this outtake shit right? (MUST. LISTEN.)

They front load this album with the only listenable song. One Hit is a pretty good distillation of what Rolling Stones, Inc. is capable of.

Winning Ugly and Back to Zero are what people think of when they think of shitty, late period Stones. The rest of the album is so unremarkably shitty, I cannot even remark. And of course, there is Harlem Shuffle. LOMIT.

It sets the stage for another "comeback" rekkid in Steel Wheels, though.

I was referring strictly to the media narrative behind "Mick's Emotions" etc.

Oh I know. I actually remember that whole media blitz and people I knew being *vomit* EXCITED about a big comeback from the Stones.

At the time, I shrugged and cranked up something loud, fast and heavy.

Yeah, my bro and I used to make fun of the Rock and a Hard Place video by singing "Stuck between my cock and your mom's face," and then turn on Yo MTV Raps and jam out to some Left My Wallet in El Segundo.

From the first note you can hear that while this might not be great, the high gloss sheen Don Was put on here, and every thing he touches, should be grounds for a cease and desist.

This was the last Stones album I ever bought or listened to. From here on in, if I ever wanted to hear the Stones it'd be from their classics or from my O3CGR.

Could another producer have done something with these songs? Could they have been molded into something listenable? (e.g. 'What Am I Going To Do With Your Love' and 'Crushed Pearl', although the latter clearly morphed into one of their greatest songs 'Thru and Thru')

IMO, no matter what the prevailing opinion of Don Was might be, he was polishing turds.

I don't really think this is redeemable, but imagine what some of the later stuff would have become with a real producer/EDITOR. Couldn't someone have said "Micky, baby, this is shite"?

God Damn, I forgot how tragically bad Back To Zero is.

The Stones were on life support after Some Girls and died after Waiting on A Friend. That being said, if there is such a thing, I'd be interested in a post 'Tattoo You' Best-of comp if anyone might be up to the task.

Yeah, it's Shakespearean in a way, oscillating between tragedy and comedy and you ultimately never want to hear it again once it's over.

Mcap, I believe Gar put together a Best of the Worst comp awhile back.

I think we made competing ones. Epic.
