I may give it a go. I don't like their earlier stuff that much, but I believe I said the same thing about the Dum Dum Girls early releases.

I wouldn't say it's as huge a leap forward as the Dum Dum Girls took, but it's a definite improvement.

I believe you but I really disliked their first one. To the point that I'm not sure I can muster any enthusiasm for this.

For some reason it sticks out in my mind that you liked the Best Coast?

This one is OK (I downloaded it on Rads' comments) but it gets very same-y pretty quickly. Sounds like good music to throw on a party mix, but not something I can stomach a full album of.

Nah, I enjoy Waaves's last album, which is what you might be thinking of.

I can barely tell my hipster neon rainbow Ray Ban bands apart these days.

i thought best coast was pretty straightforward rock, yeah? mad California though, maybe that's the ray ban thing. i thought waaaaaaves was another chillwave (?) band.

they are all lo-fi on purpose faux fuzz indie pop bands. except they only find a catchy melody once in a blue moon. all these bands aren't fit to hang from Kleenex Girl Wonder's ballsack.

ok i'm going to bed.

that new Best Coast is fucking booooring.

Yeh, this definitely doesn't sound like something you'd like.

Dalen, you should give it some time. It is far more interesting then the first album. Each song is more distinctive rather than the same song written over again with different pacing like the first album imo. But, I get your point "?" in that it is more crafted, but an improvement.

I have, and man, it just sounds so 'samey' as Dave pointed out. I do miss the raw end of the production on the first album as well.

2012 album from the Irish singer/songwriter and former Energy Orchard main man. The album was produced by Rock legend Mark Knopfler. Knopfler adds his distinctive guitar alongside other luminaries such as Jerry Douglas, Michael McGoldrick and John McCusker on a more folky sounding record.

Disk 2 is bonus disk of 11 cuts from previous Kennedy albums, selected by the artist.

I heard a glimpse and liked some of it:

Lissy Trullie - Lissy Trullie

Review

by Matt Collar

Lissy Trullie's 2012 eponymous sophomore effort finds the singer moving away from the more lo-fi rock of her 2009 debut, Self-Taught Learner, and embracing a slicker, moodier sound. A kind of punk fashion wunderkind on her debut, Trullie, whose cool, deep voice and enigmatic persona once drew comparisons to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O and Patti Smith, here brings to mind the theatrical rock of such artists as Nico with some of the dramatic muscle of '90s alternative icon PJ Harvey. Working with producers John Hill (Rihanna, Kings of Leon, M.I.A.) and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, Trullie expands upon the melodic and darkly romantic nature of her previous work while also adding more driving post-punk beats and textured '80s goth and college rock guitars, synths, and vocal effects. To these ends, we get the expansive and cinematic opener, "Rules We Obey," the gothy, club-ready "Spit You Out," and the driving "Heart Sound," which sounds like a lost Siouxsie and the Banshees classic. Elsewhere, Trullie amps up the melodic pop on the jangly, '60s-sounding "Caring," evinces the late-'70s dance-punk-meets-reggae of the Clash on "It's Only You, Isn't It?," and keeps things fuzzed-out and anthemic on "X Red." Despite the title, Self-Taught Learner was anything but the work of an amateur, and here Trullie is clearly the queen of her post-punk castle.

This'll probably suck in all kinds of ways, but I'm posting just because it struck me that their first album was released 17 years ago and it's sorta fucking me up that this band has been around that long.

Downloading Marty Stuart now. This guy deserves more attention from fans of traditional honky tonk style country music and country music outside the pop country mainstream. I think if you like Dwight Yoakem and other of that ilk, you should really also be listening to Marty Stuart.

Smash Palace “Do It Again”
Brothers Stephen and Brian Butler continue to weave melodic magic with this excellent release. The super catchy jangle of “Living It Lonely” starts us off, then we get the muscular riffs of the Tom Petty-like “It’s Easy.” Another favorite here is “Do It Again,” as Butler recalls the compulsion to rock from his past influences (The Beatles, Stones, CBGB’s) “before the music was all for free.” It’s a desperate plea to bring back what made rock and roll matter to so many lives. His vocal reminds me of Ray Davies – both “21st Century Boy” and “Tell Her Now” sounds like a long lost Kinks tunes.

Talk about infectious – both “She’s Never Coming Back” and “Dreamer” will stick in your head and stay there for good. The chord progressions and organ of “Sympathy Runs Deep” are classic as well. Not a mediocre note here as this album makes my top ten for 2012 list easily. After last year’s “7″ made my 2011 list I didn’t think the band could get better — I was wrong. Highly recommended as essential power pop.

Mean Jeans - On Mars
Image
think Spicoli Ramones = dumb fun

Quote:
you'd get the not inaccurate idea that this band doesn't take much seriously (besides getting wasted). But one spin of On Mars makes clear that there's one thing these guys hold sacred -- the Ramones. Thousands of bands have tried to follow the template of the brothers from Forest Hills, but Mean Jeans not only bash their guitars and write hooky but skeletal melodies much like the Ramones, lead singer Billy Jeans even tries to replicate the Noo Yawk twang of Joey Ramone's vocals (with various degrees of success), while drummer Jeans Wilder occasionally makes with scrappy harmony vocals not unlike Dee Dee.
