Anyone have any experience filing a nut? Seems like a risky maneuver if one wants to change the gauge of their strings or playing style/change in "action".

Me too.
Except when guitars are set up, they're set up for how technician plays or envisions the customer to play.
I want to get this thing sounding pristine on my own terms because every time I've taken it in for a set-up, when I get it home, there's always something screwy with it.

Yeah, I've gotten pretty good at doing my own setups but I've just never slotted a nut. I wouldn't think it would be too hard if you get a set of corresponding files.

Is it a bone nut or graphite?

Bone nut me-thinks (researching at work).

My understanding is if you file the nut for a specific gauge, then you're more or less locked into that gauge for that particular nut since, in theory, a lighter gauge would decrease action -- and possibly create buzzing or other annoyances. But in that instance, could the loss of action be compensated through elevating the bridge?

I'm just thinking this thing through before I make the leap. And after further research, replacing the nut isn't impossible, but it's not something I would want to do.

Yeah, you can almost always futz with the bridge to compensate. I mean, I've bought preslotted nuts before and been able to get a decent setup. Do you really change gauges of strings that much? I feel like I've played more or less the same gauge for the last 15 or more years.

One problem I have run into is needing to shim a neck to compensate for a Bridge that sits up high (a Badass 2). Not my favorite thing.

Might be plastic. Take your time if it is.

I think for the first go-round I'm going to set it up without filing the nut since I like way more action than most people....just gotta find the time to get some feeler gauges and another capo.

Synthetic bone -- or maybe a fancy way of saying plastic?

I might give these acetylene torch tip cleaners a try to hone the nut.

So you just want to remove height from a nut right?

Yes (I'm not cutting a blank nut). Just "enhancing" the factory cut notches.

Oh. Why? (unless a string is jumping out of its groove, that seems sort of unnecessary.)

(I had to do that on my Strat: The "G" kept jumping out so I gave it a scrub with the smallest file I had and went on about my business.)

If the slots are deep enough to keep strings from jumping and you truly need a lower nut (not truss rod adjustments, bridge adjustments, neck shim) then you should probably be removing the nut and sanding down the base of it with fine grit paper mounted to a perfectly flat base (tempered glass, marble tile, etc). Then re-glue. If you make the slots too deep the strings will bind in them as you bend and cause wacky tuning issues. Strings need to be able to slide through the nut slots.

THIS is the place that opened up a few blocks from home...

Trouble. Gonna swing by tonight on the way home. I need a reverb pedal, badly. Gonna go play steel with a guy's band next week. Nervous as hell.

Just get a holy grail nano on eBay and don't walk into that shop. If you won't listen, don't pick up a k line to test drive.

Looks like there's 450 million of them going for the identical BIN price of $121.50, and 2 really used ones. But this does indeed look like the pedal I need.

That's alot of options on that pedal. I like pedals that do one or two things well. I'd want to try it out first.

Also, i like the neunaber Wet pedal, and I have a friend how has the Mooer Shim Verb which is cool. I personally have the Holier Grail. It's rad, the Holiest Grail is too many useless options.

How about http://www.ebay.com/itm/Univox-Pro-Verb ... 43b76b62ac ?

Although this is probably much more practical.

A little late to the party but I also endorse the Holy Grail. Should be good for you.
