I just got here. Finishing the first set. Still Hate Tennessee Jed, but the rest is pretty damned good. While everything is adequate, the sound is good, not much over or under playing, this actually almost seems like Dead By Numbers -- funny you can listen to a band so much that their best stuff sounds almost pedestrian :)

I think the "Playin' In The Band" jam on this is one of the best things we've listened to thus far.

After much consideration, we're gonna take it Across The Pond for: Volume 7

I came close to choosing Volume 29, a 1977 show that includes 6 discs and 2 nights, one of them at The Fabulous Fox Theatre, but I got exhausted just reading the set list -- sounds like a Friday pick at best :)

I'm still on Vol.3. I can't pay as much attention as I'd like to here in the office.

I've got 29 in my "considerations" pile for possible future picks... it is a fucking beast.

I also knew that a 77 show, from The Fabulous Fox was essentially your territory.

It must be said that like People Who Died, Promised Land is one of those songs that just fucking rings out when you hear it. A beast of a song no matter how it is done.

It's great, it often is, but is this really remarkably better than most other Playin's, let alone 6 shows worth of material?

Then again, I've been singing "Black Throated Wind" all day.

Volume 7 is going up right now.

Also I was thinking that with anything more than 3 discs we should spread it over two days.

I dunno, I listened to it this morning in blinding rain, very very slow moving traffic on the 285: what can I say, it hit me in the right spot at the right time.

Dick's Picks Volume 7

Image

Quote:
The seventh volume in the Grateful Dead's no-frills Dick's Picks series of live albums is a three-and-a-half-hour, triple-CD distillation of three shows played at the Alexandra Palace in London on September 9, 10, and 11, 1974. The location is a good clue to what makes this a pick: Presumably, few Deadheads have tapes from the group's short, unheralded 1974 European tour. (Deadhead surveys of favorite tapes list these shows among the least frequently mentioned for the year.) Coming only a month before the Dead retired for a year and a half, these performances mark the end of a chapter in the band's history and help to eviscerate the memory of the 1976 Steal Your Face concert album, recorded in October 1974, which is generally considered the worst Dead album ever made. Nevertheless, the group still sounds listless, hobbled by its single drum set and the inappropriate team of keyboardist Keith and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. The Dead's most recent studio album at this point, released a little over two months previously, was Grateful Dead From Mars Hotel, and that record's most memorable songs, "Scarlet Begonias" and "U.S. Blues," bookend this set. Otherwise, the set list is fairly typical of the early '70s with such familiar songs as "Playing in the Band," "Jack Straw," "Brown-Eyed Women," and "Truckin'." And there is a performance of the Dead's signature song, "Dark Star," that weighs in at 24-plus minutes. Sound quality is OK, with the vocals sometimes coming off as compressed and boxy. Like most of the Dick's Picks albums, this one is for the cognoscenti not the neophyte.

This is kind of subdued thus far. Just starting on 'Black Throated Wind'.

A highlight once again...

Donna is definitely a bit of a nuisance on this show. She shits all over Scarlet Begonias, and from that point on I'd just like her to go away. Alright on Beat It On Down the Line, though, I guess. Just keep her pulled back in the mix. Row Jimmy and Mississippi 1/2 Step are unfortunately kind of listless here.

I'm on Weather Report right now, and earlier Donna Jean became the dripping faucet. One doesn't normally hear the dripping faucet unless you accidentally lock in on it as a background sound, then when your consciousness fully incorporates it, you can no longer ignore it and the drip moves to the perceptual forfront. I want to shut Donna Jean off but I can't. Her caterwauling near the end of 'Playing in the Band' was hideous.

'Truckin' is actually pretty great here. Relative to the energy level at the beginning at least, this is speed metal.
