I hate to sound like Malachi, but wouldn't firing Miles at LSU be of a piece with how NU did Frank Solich? In fact, worse, since Miles has actually won a title of his own?

As I said at Deadspin, if Miles goes, allow LSU to know the pain of Bill Callahan, Head Coach.

That's one perspective. Another perspective is it would be preventing a Larry Coker situation. But how long was Solich at NE? We've had Miles for a while and it's infuriating to watch. Squandered a lot of talent since that NC team.

See Mike Archer and Curly Hallman. Been there, done that.

6 years. He was 58-19. Uncle Les is 55-15 with an MNC and an SEC.

Not my team, but I think Less gets an extra year for winning that MNC with Jamarcus at QB.

Yeah, I'm not ever supportive of firing a coach that has a team ranked in the top ten and that remains competitive in the most difficult conference in NCAA Football. I realize he isn't one of the Bayou Bengals own, but his career mark at LSU is virtually even with Saban and they both have had one title at LSU.
Solich was faulted by traditionalists for firing all of the crusty old coaches from the Osborne era that weren't bringing in quality recruits and then replacing them with much of the current staff, and the AD at the time thought that Nebraska was no longer competitive with the Big 12 South, one after making that move and fired him with a 9-3 record and a bowl win without him as coach.
Coker's record at Miami was better in is last three years than Randy Shannon's first three, so it appears that Hurricanes have pretty much made a lateral move up to this point.

People forget. Jamarcus left early and was not part of MNC. LSU won it with Green Bay Packer back-up Matt Flynn, who was in the same recruiting class as Russell but didn't play until he left.

Less has had 4 major clock management problems during his tenure. It's an issue. Has nothing to do with him being a Michigan man. We've also had the worst defense(08') in the SEC and the worst offense (09') in the SEC during his tenure. Looks like we're heading to the cellar of SEC offense again.

all that proves is Coker left Miami with nothing for Shannon to make lemonade out of.

I don't buy that excuse after four years, especially when the Jacory Harris recruiting class of 2008 featured five players from Miami's Northwest High School, who were considered the best High School football team in the state and Robert Marve, who was considered the 2nd best Florida QB recruit behind Jacory Harris.
According to Scout, Coker had better recruiting classes on average than Shannon has, Coker's classes ranked #13, #14, #12 and #3 in his last four years, and He only finished with fewer than 9 wins in 2006. Randy Shannon pulled a Callahan out of the gate with a losing record and has failed to win a bowl game.

Yeah, I remember now. I was thinking of the team from the year before that destroyed Notre Dame for some reason.

Is that right that Les Miles has a $15 MILLION buyout? Dayum.

Tim Brando of CBS is quoted as saying it is roughly $13 million according to a quick google search, and he believes that LSU would really have to suck it up this year for him to get fired.
They should win the games against Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State and Ole Miss, and could get at least two wins against Florida, Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas with stellar defensive play.
8-4 or 9-3 in the SEC isn't worthy of being fired over just yet.
I think I'd stick with Jarrett Lee and try to rely on Ridley when you can the rest of the year.
Whoever decided to sub Jefferson back in for the final plays should no longer have the authority to such a thing, since that was the main factor in failed clock management.

Recruiting class ranks are very misleading. Those are based on when the guy faxes his LOI. Not when he actually shows up on campus. Not when he actually stays past a year. I'd like to see how many of those Coker classes actually contributed. Mississippi State, under Sherril, was famous for signing a bunch of players they knew had no chance of ever playing at State just to make their class look good on paper.

For example, Les has had some great classes. But one of our problems right now is that almost none of his OL recruits from a couple of years ago were able to stay on the team. Or other problem is our OC sucks and our head coach looks clueless managing the game from the sidelines.

I'm not excusing Shannon. But he inherited a mess when he took over Miami. But he's had more than enough time to clean it up. If they want to fire him, than so be it. Doesn't mean they were wrong to fire Coker too. Also, it was easier to recruit to Miami after the Davis era than it was after the Coker era.

As far as the buyout, it's stupid. They gave Les that contract after he flirted with Michigan and won the MNC to keep him here.

Wow, Turner Gill might be taking this discipline and ethics nonsense a bit too far.
He should probably be a little more concerned about winning games now than about whether or not his players are banging their girlfriends/random girls in their rooms after 10pm.
This seems like something his buddy Husker receivers coach Ron Brown would try to implement if he had ever sniffed a head coaching job. Not even his mentor Tom Osborne bothered to care whether or not his players had women stay over late, he was just happy they stayed out of the bars and won football games.

The infamous Lawrence Phillips incident happened after he found out Scott Frost had his ex-girlfriend over at his place. I'm not excusing his actions, but Frost, a current Oregon Assistant coach, did Phillips dirty and basically used the girl as a pawn in some feud he was allegedly having with Phillips. Also Kate McEwen, the girl who was viciously assaulted had been living with Phillips up until the incident.

Christian Peter allegedly raped that girl in his room and then again in her room with two of his teammates watching. There's no excuse for his actions, but I'm pretty sure he'd be raping with or without a curfew in place. Hell, he was even raping in the bars during the off season according to rumors.

Quote:
Peter was arrested a total of eight times, and convicted four times. The charges included threatening to kill a parking attendant, trespassing, public urination, refusing to comply with police, illegal possession of alcohol, failure to appear in court, and grabbing a woman by the throat.

He shouldn't have been playing football for Nebraska let alone the NFL for six years afterward, and from all accounts he was the biggest douchebag to walk the campus during that time period.

The name Christian Peter is dripping with irony.

Man, I'm getting sick of going to East Lansing and coming home disappointed. Michigan State just has our number.

My Huskers take on K-State tonight in Manhattan on ESPN primetime tonight.
The Huskers have never lost a thursday night game, and have won five straight against the Wildcats.
As it looks now, this game and the game at home against Mizzou on October 30th will most likely decide the winner of the Big 12 North.
Pelini has yet to lose to an unranked conference foe on the road, so it will be interesting to see if Bill Snyder and the home crowd can lead K-State to an upset win tonight.

Also of note:
Nebraska and Oklahoma are in early negotiations to renew the rivalry in 2020, so that they can play for the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Game of the Century in 2021.

thanks for the reminder - i'm in baseball mode right now. i just hope the cats put up a fight - summoning the ghost of michael bishop now. kind of shocked to see NU scheduled a bye week to prepare for this.

They didn't schedule a bye week for this game, both Nebraska and Texas were to have a bye week leading up to their game next week and were initially going to play next Thursday Night on ESPN, but the Longhorns wanted no part of a night game in Lincoln on primetime tv, so ESPN approached Nebraska and K-State about moving their game from what would have been last saturday to tonight.

The Huskers gained a few days of practice for the Wildcats, but lost a few that they would have had to prepare for the Longhorns.
K-State hasn't played since September 25th as well, so neither team is coming off a short week of preparation.
