I was all set to go to that Logsdon Farmhouse tasting on Friday and turned to get on the freeway and saw a parking lot in front of me and quickly took the fork off of it and went home instead. Luckily, they ended up showing up at a Beer store about five miles from my house on Saturday instead. I mistimed when the brewer was going to be there but did get a chance to try 4 of their beers on tap. I doubt that they are distributed anywhere outside of the West coast but if you can find their Seizon Bretta or their Flanders Ale, buy as much as you can.

I also picked up a few things this weekend:

a Belgian Sour 6 pack sampler called Sour Power that includes a couple of Monks Cafe and a few others I'm forgetting
3 Logsdon Farmhouse Ales
an Eagle Rock Unity (Prickly Pear Berliner Rye) &
an Epic Brewery Brainless on Cherries

Recents:

Still working my way through the Boulevard and Green Flash offerings since they are still relatively new to town:

Green Flash Rayon Vert: Perfectly sums up my feelings about Belgian Pale Ales in general: Too much carbonation, not enough payoff. Meh.

Boulevard Tank 7: I'm not the biggest saison guy but this is delicious and packs a mean punch. Also several dollars cheaper than its Belgian counterparts.

Uinta Dubhe: An Imperial Black IPA. I'm not a big fan of Black IPA's and probably would have skipped this if I had been paying closer attention. Not a bad beer though at all and one that enters the conversation of "booziest beer that doesnt taste like it". I drank two of these watching football and my wife asked me "why are you drunk? eat some dinner" A very dangerous 9.2%.

Over the weekend, I drank a few Green Flash/St Feuillien collab, Friendship Brew (Black Saison). Really tasty brew combining two of my favorite styles: Abbey Ale and Saison.

Quote:
double hopped with Styrian Golding and Cascade hops featuring "secret spices" enhanced by fruity esters and and a malt base akin to an Oatmeal Stout

I'm glad you posted about this beer. I was going to mention it, if no one else had done so.
I'd certainly try it, if I was attending GABF this year, but bull testicles are pretty popular in Nebraska as well, so it doesn't disgust me all that much.

I'm not disgusted by bull testicles as food. I'm just not sure I really get the value of putting them in beer. If someone had a bottle and wanted to pour me a glass, I'd try it but I'm not planning to seek out that opportunity.

You know what would be great in this glass of beer? Bull balls.

Picked up a 4 pack of this about a week ago as well. I thought it was okay. To me, it tasted like a hoppy porter than a saison. Also, the general flavor profile of Green Flash dominated. I didn't get much St. Feuillien in there at all. Still, not bad. Glad I have a couple more left in the fridge. I was also making chili that night and that could've played a factor in my judgement. Def not the beer for that.

As mentioned previously, Alpine/New Belgium's collba - Super IPA. Decent beer for the price but something kept peeking through. For every bit of piney deliciousness there would be this funk that I hated. I don't know what the hop is. Columbus maybe? Whatever it is, it's the same hops that makes me hate Abita's Jockamo IPA. That taste of funky, sweaty sock. Maybe this needed to be drank at it's freshest. Wasn't "super" impressed.

Sweetwater Motorboat - this is their Fall seasonal and there is no pumpkin to be found. It's an ESB and a pretty good one at that. I'd like it to be a little more subtle. Some of that caramely flavor is a little intense but overall, a good beer and a nice change of pace from the traditional fall seasonals. Will taste really good once we start dipping into the 40's at night.

Some pumpkins:

Shipyard's Smashed Pumpkin - this, along with Weyerbacher's Imperial Pumpkin, are probably my favorite pumpkin ales. Really good flavor but the booze isn't overwhelming. Drank this by the lake as an after dinner brew and was damn near perfect.

Southern Tier - Pumpking - Still waiting on this brewery to impress me. Some people have sworn by this beer for the style but I just wasn't feeling it at all. Too boozy and overly fragrant. Tasted more like a medicine-y digestif than a beer. Meh.

Terrapin - Pumpkinfest

Solid offering from Terrapin whose regular beers mostly leave me a little meh (although I'm coming around on the Hopsecutioner). Definitely wins in the most drinkable dept. Not nearly as big as the Weyerbacher or the Shipyard so the flavor isn't quite as dominant but there is enough there to drink more than a couple which is ulimately it's best selling point. The ABV is way lower at about 6%. A winner for them IMO.

We had a top notch bottle tasting party for our homebrew club tonight during this Ohio State debacle. It included Pliny the Elder, Nebraska Brewing Company Responsibly and a myriad of small regional breweries throughout the country that I'm not giving due props to at this time.

capn, that hoppy tripel was excellent. probably shouldn't have paired it with a dogfish 120 as i'm now pretty drunk.

If you're in Bell's distro network, the 11th anniversary "This One Goes to 11" imperial red should be out soon, if not now. Ran me $18/sixer and it's a beast! Nice rebound to the fairly disappointing 10,000.

I forgot to mention the Full Sail IPA and the Rogue Voodoo Donut Maple Bacon Ale.
The Full Sail was pretty decent for an English style IPA, but taste weak due to the prevalence of hop bomb American style IPA's.
The Maple Bacon beer was disgusting, and a complete ripoff at $12.99 a bottle. It tasted like a burnt to a crisp steak that was doused in liquid smoke. The only thing maple about it was the initial smell.

Holy hell you went for it, huh? So it was carbonated, and everything was alright? I have one left too, up in the cabinets.

It could've been a little more carbonated but it wasn't flat or anything. The taste was really outstanding though fuck if I can really remember anything about it now. I should've taken notes when I was drinking it.

I think I forgot to tell you that I drank mine too: It tasted fine, just undercarbonated (I should have left it out instead of refrigerating it) and most definitely did not make me sick. Good flavor actually.

I was wondering. That leaves Derris right?

Anytime, I guess. Probably as carb'ed as it's gonna get. As Bloor said, let it warm for maybe 5 mins before you pop that cap, should help a teeny bit. And may god have mercy on your soul.

The mistake was putting it in the fridge at all until I was ready to drink it. Once you put it in the fridge, the yeast is no longer working.

So Derris, if I were you, I'd take it out of the fridge, put in your cabinet for a few weeks, then chill it and drink. For science!

I was planning on making an Oak Aged American Brown/IPA hybrid for my next beer, but Northern Brewer sold out of Maris Otter malt Syrup, so I decided to go with American Dark Wheat/Dunkel Weizen hybrid.

That reminds me - I oaked the winter stout last night, and will check on how it is when I transfer to the secondary in a week or so. If it's not strong enough I will add more (only put in 4 chunks). And the Maris Rye Pale needs to clarify in a secondary too... I have too much shit to do.
