Its a steel string parlor, not a nylon string classical. Deceptive looking for sure. I love twelve fret slot heads

Oh man. I lust after parlour guitars. Some dude was playing one next to Elton John on the 3 seconds of the Grammies I caught last night.

Let's see a pic.
Those Collings are the most-gorgeous-sounding instruments that I've ever heard. Just stunning.
And I am jealous as hell.

Remember, if you get it pregnant, you buy it.

So, I'm about 3/4 of the way towards having enough money to get my 69 Tele Thinline reissue that I've been coveting.
But, then the shop has a used Mexi-built Jaguar that I played tonight. And I loved it. Lots of cool tone possibilities and much variety.
Plus, it's only $400 (used, in damn-near perfect condition).
Any of you have any experience with any recent-model Fender Jags from Mexico?

But I'm thinking that I want to at least wait until the 69 comes in and I get to play it before pulling the trigger on either.

Whaddya think?

I haven't played the mexi-jags, but Fenders are a little easier to evaluate than other guitars. If it feels good in your hands, then everything else is a bolt-on at worst. If it feels good, if it bends well and sustains and sings on your lap, then pickups and so forth is the easy part. All of that can be changed on the cheap later. Archtops, glued necks, acoustics, all that stuff is voodoo and art. Fenders are just math... shit's bolted on and adjustable. That was Leo's genius in the 40's. Sorry to over-generalize but if that jag makes you grin in a way you can't stop, you should probably adopt it.

That's why I'm holding out.
The Jaguar was fun and had all sorts of cool tonal variations, but I really have been wanting that Thinline. And I'm getting closer.
I just wish that I had, you know, money and stuff, because for $400, that used Jag is a helluva deal.

But, yes, I do need to show some patience and get the one that I really want.
Maybe one day, I can go back and get a Jaguar, too. It is a cool guitar in its own right.

This is the Jaguar:

And this is the Tele Thinline:

Is that the same Thinline that Derris has, Ky? If so, get ready to change the pickups, Todd. PU.

I think it is. And if so, yeah, they are not something you want to hang onto. Those pickups DEFY good sound. Actively. You can plug them into a boutique rig and not get any oomph of any kind, whatsoever. They are stone cold dead. But... they are incredibly easy to replace.

I would get it elsewhere, but half of the money that I have saved up is in the form of gift cards to the shop where I'm picking it up.
And, thanks for the tip on the pickups. Probably some Texas Specials? What would you recommend?

Depends on what you want and (obviously) what you want to spend. If it were me (and Derris if you're reading I'm talking to you here too), I'd put either some vintage wound Fralins or one of Curtis Novak's pickups in the bridge and THIS Novak pickup in the neck. (the latter is what I would actually do)

On the lower end though, you can't go wrong with some Fenders; I would probably pick the Vintage Noiseless over the Texas Specials but again that's me.

Todd the Texas Specs are HOT. They still sorta sound like a tele, but they're 75% of the way to being P90's. When they were made, the bridge was the hottest single coil pickup produced by Fender. So they're not much on strumming quietly or playing subtle rhythm stuff. They wanna get drunk and start a fight.

If you want that old twang, then Fralins are hard to top. On the cheap, Dwight Yoakam's guy (you know the guy I mean) used a Seymour Duncan Vintage pickup (not positive of the model) in his old 50's Squire. I assume the Vintage Series from them is cheapish and sounds just damned fine. I'd have to hear some sound clips between that and Fralins to be sure I wasn't just chasing prestige / voodoo / placebo effect by buying something pricier.

Oh shit, I enjoy the sound of these stacked duncans more than I thought I would.

demo video

Apprently a dummy coil cancels the noise (which is awesome) but the signal path is still single coil. They're not like "vintage" perfect sounding, but shit they sound good to me. I would use these for Rev Horton Heat shit allll day.
