We're not even half way through and I'm starting to consider what the long term effects of this venture might be.

Remember when Dahmer would pour acid into people's heads to make them zombies? It'll be a lot like that.

This St. Stephen-->Not Fade Away--->St. Stephen might be the highlight of the whole shebang for me thus far.

The Cassidy on this is especially good. Really great run from Jerry out of the chorus into a brief tight jam. I like everything about this set so far.

Indeed. I was a little skittish about it too, but goddamn, anticipatory anxiety all for naught.

I'm a big fan of the jam in "Playin'" on the last disc.

I'm starting the second show in the AM. I'm taking a Neil break, which at this point, is like taking a break from bourbon for rye.

The Dead was quite the soundtrack as I watched the balloon thing on my computer.

It's 7pm, I'm starting vol. 33.

Promised Land

Already starting off real nice. I'm digging this a ton, and rocking out while watching the rain fall. Not even the weather can dampen this high.

Dang, this sounds so good. They weren't kidding when they said that this is one of the best sounding Dick's Picks out there. So good. Evenly recorded. Everything sounds so good.

This is great track. I can see why this ultimately became a show opener post-76. Garcia's voice is tip-top shape.

Agreed on all counts with jsh on this. Really good, and really tight.

Looks Like Rain, They Love Each Other

LLR and TLEO are both songs that are hit or miss for me. Right now, I'm nursing some Southern Comfort and they sound alright. I even just found myself singing along with TLEO.

yeah, I just finished that. One of the better versions. And right into a good Scarlet Begonias with jam.

Nicely put, Yail. And agreed that this is one of the better versions of NMB.

Lazy Lightnin'

Ok, good guitar playin' but some very fractured and flat vox.

Supplication, Sugaree

Both adequate versions of the songs. Sugaree sounds better though.

Sugaree ended really nice. It got stronger and stronger. Happy with how set 1 ended.

only got through a portion of this today, but agree with all above sentiments. forced myself to listen to several albums of garage rock as research for interviews this weekend, and fostered one of the worst headaches i've ever had. damn. i'll get through this by sunday. i miss my dead.

has anyone read any grateful dead books out there that you'd recommend?

Yes, this is great! The first portion about how Rock met the band at a couple LSD tests with Kesey is maybe some of the best writing I've read (first-hand account-wise) about the era.

St Stephen>Not Fade Away>St Stephen

Damn. What a second set opener. If I was making a Lord of the Flies film, I might be tempted to use the piece of music 'round the 8-9 minute mark for a huge bonfire scene.

Slipknot

There is some free-jazz going on here. Which, methinks will segue nicely into "Drums".

Samson and Delilah

Seems slowed down for the vox part, but sounds ok for instro sections. This is ok. I've heard much better, rollicking versions which have lit a fire under me.
