Trying to find a crap movie to watch in bed with the lady tonight. She was hot on Bridesmaids til she saw it, and also thought it sucked. Any recommendations for something I can download? I never watch TV or movies...

I dig bikes, so this was a natural love on my part. However, I think if you just enjoy the idea of someone pushing themselves to accomplish a seemingly impossible feat, and love beautiful video of our country, you'll like this as well.

The Ride Divide race is called one of the hardest races in the world--and its not even really a race per se. More of an endurance challenge, starting in Banff, following a rough network of highways, access and forest service roads, and rough trails, the rider eventually ends up at the Mexican border. All riders are self-sufficient (meaning no pace cars or support). You buy food and supplies as you go, and phone reception is less than 15% of the time.

The doc followers riders as they struggle through the elements, with mental and physical pain. Some are sidelined with injuries, while others are just overcome with loneliness. The record is doing the race in 16 days--but that's near superhuman of a feat.

Really? It failed my first test in that it all seemed set up to "be funny" instead of actually being funny because of the situations that happened.

Difference between say, The Wayans Bros and Will Ferrell-as-lead-actor, and actual funny movies.

I know what you mean, and I got mildly annoyed at some of Wiig's SNL character traits coming out in a few spots, but the bigger chick just stole it. She was incredibly good, had some great lines. Nothing got on my nerves much, and there were some great lines... that's all it takes these days for me. You have to start out in a state other than "I will hate this" I think. That's probably a key ingredient to enjoying it.

I had heard it was funny and the wife wanted to like it - I think it suffered from undo expectations and wooden acting/overlong scenes.

English girl and the peas was the best.

Liked the location shoots in Bay View, too. Even if I am not cool enough to live there.

I'll agree on that point. Scenes dragged on.

Saw The Ides of March last Friday.

Ryan Gosling played LooGAR.

Great flick.

...and then there was this film. Normally, just by the trailer and poster art I would expect this to be another Clash of the Titans. However, Nicolas Winding Refn who directed Bronson did this, so I decided to check it out. I'll say this--its incredibly beautifully shot, and the score is pretty great if you like post-rock. The problem is, it suffers from its own device, that of a minimalistic film. To me, this would've worked better if there was absolutely no dialog. As with many minimalistic films, Valhalla is open to interpretation, which gives it some extra legs if you want to believe it has a deeper meaning than what is up on the screen. If your a tech geek like me, this was shot using the Red camera RAW format.

Decided to give this a chance after Drive...you were right on with you're review, FR. It looked and sounded great, but UGH...this was pretty insufferable. Has anyone seen the Pusher trilogy?

Got this because its about a guy from Baltimore, and has to do with art. Billy Pappas is an artist--at least he went to school to be one. At some point, he let his inner voice talk him about of it, and he became a waiter. During this time he met up with a guy who inspired and pushed him to become a better artist. To rethink what art is, and how he could put his personal spin on it. Pappas ends up spending 8 and a half years working on a piece so detailed that to truly appreciate it you need a magnifying glass. One quote in the film states there 10,000 dpi on the drawing. Billy's dream is for famed artist David Hockney to look at his artwork. The doc follows Billy through the process. I won't spoil anything because I think one of the beautiful aspects of the doc is watching as this whole thing unfolds.

Nice.

Love this doc. I'm biased because my friend Julie Checkoway directed this film. Unfortunately, as a Utah director she got rejected for Sundance but debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. It's well worth a view.

How'd she get linked up with Dr. Vikan at the Walter's Art Gallery? Apparently, that's the way it started? Also, it seems just from my brief googling--Billy Pappas is still kinda not doing anything?

Sunday I had a little mini-horror movie marathon thingy.

Image
The Shining
Kubrick isn't a master for no reason.

Image
Black Christmas (original)
An early slasher. I like it more the second time around, actually.

Image
The Descent
One of the more effective modern horror films I've seen. While it does rely a lot of the "jump scare", it is a much more subtle jump--the sort that makes you go "wait, did I just see...?" I really liked it.

I finally got around to watching The Trip last night. Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom pair up again to make another excellent movie. I didn't like it quite as much as Tristram Shandy but it's close.

Saw this today and it's gut wrenching. Shannon certainly deserves Oscar consideration, as does Jessica Chastain.

I'm curious to see this, especially to see how much/little this character resembles his role as Agent Van Alden from Boardwalk Empire.

I have not yet seen it myself, but the Replacements documentary Color Me Obsessed is high on my list of things to see when the family isn't around to complain.
