I'm shocked at the number of people who didn't know what IDM meant...I mean I don't like what it stands for either, but by this point it's definitely a well established genre.

No, it isn't at all. I would suspect there are probably a number of people here who don't really listen to enough electronic music to even know there are there genres that actually have acronyms.

Yeah, it is. Well, it's actually a subgenre, but whatever. It's as "well established" as anything else, and whether you or anyone else on this board knows or cares about it is irrelevant. It's name, like most genre and subgenre names, came more from journalists and label PR people than from artists or fans so naturally a lot of people don't like it. I think it's pretty dumb, too, but no other name for it has ever really stuck. Still, it's been around for over a decade and represents reasonably well-delineated portion of the electronic music scene. That's more or less "well established" in my book. It makes as much sense (or more) than "indie rock" or "post rock" do as defined genres.

And I'm not siding with Makes No Sense as I think most of his comments in this thread are pretty embarrassing.

Dude, I don't agree with Dalen on much of anything, but I can still kinda see his point here. You kinda just got into a bunch of name calling and bullshit, and I took issue with the same statement from your opening post that he did. It reminds me of that thread alongdrive started where he says "I don't know anyone with decent taste in music who likes Led Zeppelin" or something to that effect. I know this is sort of different and that you're saying that you do actually like BoC, but maybe you can see what I'm getting at. Just saying that you wanted to hate them is kinda getting things off on the wrong foot and makes you appear too image-conscious.

Anyway, sometime when I'm less drunk and sleepy...

I still probably wouldn't feel like trying to explain this any better.

I love this album, and I have never spoken to anyone about it, nor had anyone name-drop it in my presence. My verdict: I like it because its good.

I understand, but I mean I think I explained myself pretty well. Any album that you constantly hear or read comments like "it brings me back to my childhood!" and "it reeks of warm nostalgia" -- especially coming from the same general group of kids who think the Kaiser Chiefs are a great new original band, and would normally have NOTHING to do with this kind of music -- is enough to turn you off from it. Today, for the first time, I listened to it for "what it actually is," and without all of that shit I just mentioned in the back of my mind, and I really enjoyed it. Many people have commented that it's great background music, but I think it's infinitely better when listened to very closely and judged as a whole. I'm on my third listen today alone.

Does that make sense now, to anyone? It seems that I often come off unclear to people...maybe I just don't explain myself well enough the first time around, or not as well as it seems in my mind.

Fine, I admit my ignorance then. In my 20 years of music reading and listening I've never really heard that term before.

To be fair, I guess the term IDM has only been in use for the past 5 or 6 years, but I think it applies retroactively to stuff going back to the mid-90s. Still, I dunno how you've managed to miss it, but good for you. Most people seem to agree that it's a really dumb name, and when I first became aware that it was taking hold, I was pretty disappointed.

Fair enough. I don't guess I don't listen to enough electro type stuff to be aware of it. Good on me.

Hi-Scores EP is the best thing thing they've put out so far

Also, this thread is embarrassing for both Dalen and Makes No Sense At All

Dalen, and I don't know what I'm talking about.... you both need to throw on this record and calm down.

This thread is the best evidence yet that IDM is an obvious misnomer.

This thread is awesome, especially the fact that it is an argument about why people like unlistenable music. Because this album is fucking teddible.

jesus christ...does IDM really stand for 'intelligent dance music'?

that's just fucking horrible.

My question: do people really try to dance to stuff like this? I'm picturing Elaine's dance on Seinfeld . . .

Short answer: no.

Don't think of it as an acronym for "intelligent dance music" -- that moniker was (I'm sure) meant as irony. Think of it as eye-dee-em.

You know, like "Dusty". People ask me, "how do you get 'Dusty' from 'Peter'", and at this point, I just tell 'em, you don't. "I've been Dusty for so long, it stopped mattering from whence it came."

Similarly, IDM. It's now a genre, forget what it stood for.
