On a related, note, how do you pronounce Bonor Obnerst? "Bahn-er"? (As in autobahn?) Or...heh-heh..."Boner" as in, well, in whatever boners go into.

That's a good question. It can be voiced both ways. I'll leave it with you.

Mot probably pronounces his name mawt. But in French it would be moh, meaning 'word'. Hmm!

Actually, I pronounce it Throat Warbler Mangrove.

Long O. The first time I heard it pronounced "ahb-ner" was over brews with Chuck D on the day after Christmas last year. I found it rather jarring to be pronounced that way, and ever since then have wondered how everyone else pronounces it. In fact, I kept meaning to start this exact same poll/thread, but kept forgetting to do so.

Haq's explanation regarding the pronounciation of the word's origin seems to be the best justification for me to continue pronouncing it with the long O. Darrin should continue pronouncing it "oob-ner," because that's how Groundskeeper Willie sang during his failed Be Sharps audition: "DOON-TOON."

i'm confused about this. MakesNoSenseAtAll and I got into a discussion about this last night and he said "Obner" and he pronounced it like "Ahbner" not "AHH! I'm scared!" but "ah, I see" but I thought you all meant that "Ohbner" sounded like "Oh---bner" not "Ahbner" whereas "Awbner" seemed like the right choice for the "Ahbner" route, but he told me "Ohbner" is the way we say it when I say "Ahbner" and he says "Ahbner" as well. If it's not clear enough yet, I say it the way that the doctor makes you say "Ahh" when he's putting the tongue compressor in your mouth. You know? Well, i'm just confused. Which is the right way for me? I can't tell. Is Awbner the hick way to say it? Or is it the tongue compressor way to say it? Or is Ohbner the way to go?

Oh man..

I think that's the way we should refer to its pronunciation from now on -- the tongue compressor way to say it. "Ab-lel"

Or Schwabner.

It seems you see AWB-ner if you're from the east or west coast, or Chicago. If you're from anywhere else (FT and jagged, holding down Tejas; Grape Ripple in Missouri; Monty in Wisc.), you say OHB - ner.

At the time this post is going to press, the poll is deadlocked at 24 votes each. In the event of a tiebreaker, the official pronounciation shall be determined by the originator of the word, DAT MARKCLARK, who has yet to weigh in with his opinion on the matter.

Coasts + Midwest = AHB-ner. AWB-ner is strictly Pittsburgh.
