There's a ton in Chicago, but Diner Grill is way solid and the clientele is like a Wes Anderson flick.

That's right in my hood. Will check it out.

I advocate the Culver's butterburgers as far as chain-ish burgers go. List some other Chicago ones.

Culver's is the worse. I swore it off after the Fond du Lac, Wisc., location f'd up my chili-cheese dog in November '00. It was horrible. The cheese was grated - which was ok - but dry, cold, and not anywhere near melted (it wasn't just that it was cold, but melted, cheese). The chili was runny. And the cashier had a hairy chin (while being, ostensibly, female).

Not pleasant.

The one I listed is actually in Northbrook.
Worth the trip, though if you want a really great burger.

Local institution that has been in its original location for ages. Was a favorite of my dad when he went to school and he tries to get it whenever he is back in town. F-ing great burgers and fries and shakes.

Various NC locations - Cookout
The best milkshakes I have ever had in my life. $3.99 Burger combo with two sides (chicken nuggets and hush puppies for me) and a huge sweet tea is the tits late night. They are open til 5am on weekends, which is unheard of in NC.

I can't believed I missed all of this.

Charlie's Hamburgers in Folsom, PA is the greatest burger joint of all time. Nothing except the ice cream is frozen there and they make the greatest black & white shake of all time. There's all these cool stories behind the place, but regardless that little shack smokes anything you could possibly throw at it.

I'm not that big on burgers, most of them are really not that discernible to me unless they're particularly bad, at least as far as your typical grilled burger goes. I also really enjoy the Weiner Circle cheeseburgers smothered in chedder cheese.

Hey LA folks - it has been YEARS since I've experienced the goodness of an In-N-Out burger. On the other hand, Fatburger(another longtime LA burger joint) has recently expanded to the NW and I have had the distinct pleasure of having some of their fine tasting burgers recently....can any of you LA folks offer a comparison of the two company's burgers to refresh my memory?

man, now i'm wanting in-and-out... it's been years since i've had an in-and-out burger since i don't eat red meat anymore. fatburger is good as well- they have this BOMB egg salad sandwich, but um, that's not a burger.
 from what i recall, fatburger was a bit greasier than in-and-out.

if only in-and-out made veggie/turkey burgers, i'd be in heaven!

I like the creepy religious subtext on all In-N-Out burger's cups and fry bags.

Good Dog - a little dive bar at 15/samson in Philly. They have a tall gorgonzola burger that's awesome.

White Spot, Charlottesville - Yeah, I once at three gusburgers at 3 in the morning here. That's a pound of beef, a quarter pound of cheese, and three fried eggs.

Oh, man, how could I have forgotten Hamburger Hamlet? They make a pretty decent upscale burger...

And caramelized onions! I'm salivating...

The Culver's I've been to in IL and IA have all been great, and not just because they have awesome little college hotties working at them. Whenever we're coming back from a tour on US 80, we hit about 3 Culver's on the way because it's the best thing going on the road.

Most Culver's in the MKE Metro Area are staffed by heavily-pimpled high-school males, skanky female high-school gang-wannabes, and venereal-disease-magnet female college dropouts receiving the Family Planning Waiver (a/k/a "They need their Depo. Like, now. It's Friday, and they're not going to be able to have any fun if they can't get their shot.")*.

*Note: I am not anti-contraception, and I am certainly not anti-female contraception. Women must have control of their own bodies. But if they would have just mailed in their Got-damn twelve-months reviews, which they would have received if they would have filed a change of address with the county social services, they wouldn't be in a panick about their next dosing.

the BEST burgers without a doubt!

Those are good burgers for sure. I'd also like to give the nod to The Burger Inn on US 1 in Melbourne, FL and Cruisers in Jacksonville Beach, FL. Both are highly recommended if you're in the area.

In n' Out you get this weird synergy between the grilled onions, cheese, bun & patty where it all kind of blends into 1 brilliant taste. Like the finished product is better than the sum of the parts. Fatburger although really good I don't get that same vibe. Fatburger is like a better Whopper.

Do you get the great Fatburger jukeboxes up there?- classic Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Prince, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Gap Band

You bet we get the great Jukeboxes - quite the diverse catalog of music on there....I do like your "better Whopper" analogy btw.

For whoever called Fatburger greasy, you have no idea....I always order mine with the works (except tomato) - the works there consists of mustard, relish, onions, pickles, tomato, lettuce, mayo. cheese, bacon, egg, and most importantly Chili...yes, that sound you hear IS the sound of my arteries hardening as we speak

Well if you are going to pull out the Tomahawk then I'm going to have to pull out the Tsunami Burger at the Coral Drive-in near Long Beach, WA - We do a sandcastle building contest every year there and afterwards we always hit the Coral and order a Tsunami burger - it is so big that you've got to order ahead of time because they can't cook anything else on the grill for 1/2 an hour - it is pretty darned tasty too - we usually split it about 12 ways and still have leftovers....

Here's a photo:
