Yeah, I am not sure I get this thread. I'll take it that the premise is that there bands that have one's respect, perhaps cause even a moment of two of pleasure, but in general annoy one.

SFA
Fiery Furnaces
The Decemberists
Franz Ferdinand

All for similar reason... the baroque, over-worked disease.

Now how anyone could put the RS in the category... I am speechless...

The Doors. Never really got into them. Also, Jim Morrison was a loon.

Does this topic make any sense? Most people are just listing bands that they think suck, but according to the first post it's supposed to be about bands that you acknowledge are great, but you just don't like. :wtf:
Well, in my case, I picked two bands that are so popular, that even though I don't like them, it's kind of hard to argue that so many people don't constitute some sort of audience successfully targetted.

Seriously, be sick of them all you want but hate?

I so sick of Nirvana that I never need to hear them again but I would never say I don’t like them because I use to Love them.

For all you Super Furry Animals haters, do you realize they have 7 different albums and every single one is radically different? I can understand not liking them but more likely you only heard a few things by them or you could be "I hate everything English" but that is just naïve, IMO.

I must like too many things because as far as I’m concerned they only real meaningful band that I flat out hate are Grateful Dead with almost adding the Doors. I can’t do that because I use to really like them and figure it’s just a phase. For newer bands there are plenty like Drive By Truckers and Animal Collective but figure I just haven’t given them enough of a chance.

Exactly... this is what I call baroque and overworked... as though it is a party trick... see how different we can be (as opposed to having a voice, and authentic presence and intent). Same thing with Fiery Furnaces and the new P:ano.

Oh, and I have hated the Dead for 40 years. And I continue to go see them... most recently at the Greek in Berkeley for a Jerry Garcia tribute with what's left, the toxic residue, of Deadhead Nation. Couple songs his the old apotheosis.

What's with everyone's dislike of the Doors here?

I'm gonna say...

Simon & Garfunkel
Cat Stevens
Pavement
Neil Young
Bob Dylan (I guess, I LIKE him, I just have never bothered to explore his music that much)

This is hard for me, because I usually like at least a few songs from almost everyone. Therefore it feels wrong saying that I definitively don't like an artist.

The Dismemberment Plan. I've tried and tried, but they just don't work for me.

The Replacements. I bought Let It Be like 15 years ago, because Rolling Stone had it in the top 10 albums of the 80s. It did nothing for me, so I sold it. Bought Tim a couple of years back and I like it better than Let It Be, but still pretty meh overall

Sonic Youth.

The only sonic youth song I've ever liked is unmade bed. Which is an incredible song, but everything else they've done is utterly boring to me.

I am curious WHY people dislike The Doors--is it the supreme pretensiousness, general personal unlikeability, uncool factor, Manzarek's organ? There's plenty of potential reasons, but it's worth the effort to look past most of them--except the organ. If you just can't deal with it I guess there's not much that can be done. Other than that, their hits are hard to argue with.

I've got about 8 Sonic Youth albums and find this song, and most of the Washing Machine album on the boring side.

I don't get the not liking Prince. That's just perverse. I can see how people cannot like almost everybody else they've mentioned except this one.

Although the bigger surprise is how many people don't like the Doors.

Yeah, but 1999 and Dirty Mind? The grooves just override.

I personally think he's one of the greatest artists, but my wife could never get past the moustache, goofy hair, hey-look-I'm-androgynous-and-scrawny-which-means-I'm-sexy look and the overall Jimi-as-gay-chihuahua yipping disposition.

This is the perfect example for me, by all rights I should enjoy at least SOME of this band's prodigious output, but everything I've heard is totally lost on me. Mind you I have not sat down and listened to one of their albums start to finish (I'm thinking American Beauty or Workingman's Dead), it's only been songs that I've heard (on their 'Greatest Hits') that have made me feel this way.

try listening to LIVE shows or albums (without a net, being one example) not albums. and just sit back and relax.

For the record, I like the Grateful Dead, but I haven't listened to them in a while. I guess i'm not as into them as I used to be but my SN LOL!!! is a reference to one of their albums and a Misfits song.

RE: Prince

One of my biggest turn-offs where he's concerned is how every open-minded white guy who claims to love music is supposed to like Prince. It seems like a requirement. I like a few songs, sure, but I've never been overwhelmed by his brilliance like so many other pasty music fans seem to have been.

Dirty Mind and Purple Rain are cool, but I admit that I haven't listened to them a lot. Of course I've heard most of the songs from Purple Rain enough to be pretty familiar with them, and I've heard my fair share of annoying drunk chicks singing along to "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry" in bars.

The only album of his I own is Sign O' Times, and I only like a couple of songs on it. I know it's hailed as his masterpiece, but whenever I listen to it I think about the show A Different World and going to roller skating rinks as a kid. I dunno, I just can't get into it. And just the fact that I'm not allowed to not like Prince just makes it worse. Fuck that.

Oh THAT! Yeah, I can see her point there.

And Drinky. I didn't mean that you are supposed to like Prince. I just think his first couple of albums in the 80s are just really insanely catchy and I don't understand how people can't enjoy it. It has nothing to do with being an open-minded white guy. When I first heard Prince I was 10 and I thought it was the coolest music ever. I don't think I liked it because I was being open minded, it was the music that got me.
