Is the whole idea of ID a little blasphemous (for lack of a better word)? During my time in Catholic schools I learned that faith in the existence of god was what you needed. This attempt to bring some kind of scientific acceptance seems to fly in the face of that.
Exactly. It's wrong if you approach it from either a Christian or scientific approach.
Christians who take Bible stories literally are the worst. I had Catholic schooling from ages 5-17 (still alot of Catholic schools here), then started a Science degree from 17-now). At school we were taught evolution, with 'Creation' et al (and ID, it's the same) being taught as what they should be - stories with symbolic meaning. My Religious Education teacher even said when Science conflicts with Christianity, it usually means Christians should think that perhaps they are looking at things the wrong way. If it doesn't get taught in Catholic schools (because any Catholic with half a brain sees it's a load of shit), why the fuck should it be taught in State schools?
One of the major problems is that most people don't understand the concept scientific theory. It's not "just a theory" thought up by any old kook. They are rigourously tested by peers and backed up by experiments. Science always trys to disprove and test theories to see if they hold up, whereas Religion is founded on belief and faith, not disbelief.
Also, I only skimmed the first few posts so this may have already been sais in a more comprehensible manner.
