Disregard all the lists above, and just look at mine:

1. Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004)
2. Modest Mouse - Moon and Antartica
3. Spoon - Kill The Moonlight (2003)
4. Interpol - Turn On THe Bright Lights (2002)
5. Shins - Oh, Inverted World (2002)

Other Honoroable mentions:
Nada Surf - Let Go
Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site
Wrens - Meadowlands
Clinic - Walking With Thee
White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Strokes - Is This It?

I'm always amazed at how similar Timmy's and my tastes are. Plus, both of our Fantasy Football teams suck. Coincidence?

Chowgurt,

You may want to narrow down some of the selections into a poll if you want a real opinion on which records the obner folks recommend.

I'm going to cheat and exclude stuff that's already been mentioned, with which I might agree (Talk Talk, Notwist, Dresden Dolls, Magnetic Fields, et al):

Einsturzende Neubauten, Silence is Sexy
Halou, Wiser
Matt Elliott, The Mess We Made
Sigur Ros, ()
Jenifer Smith, Code Mesa

That said, those are my choices, but I usually don't recommend music without having an idea of what your musical tastes are like, so...what are some of your favourite albums (pre1990, presumably)?

Not sure what you have already or what your tastes are, but here are some good things to start off with:

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (pioneering shoegazer pop/rock)
Guided By Voices - Human Amusements at Hourly Rates (a best of CD from one of indie rock's most prolific bands)
Ween - White Pepper (slick smartass studio pop/rock with lots of prog influences)
Portishead - self titled (gothic trip hop)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (experimental alt/Americana)

That's an entirely different question, but the answer would include nothing post-1990, and probably nothing on disc.

Careful, you're starting to sound like an old fart!
Does this mean that i have to get out the old Edison?

Actually, I don't have a non-tape copy of it right now. It's been on my list of things to square away for a while now, but I just haven't gotten around to it. The 6 original Abbott EP songs came from the Overnight Success sessions, and like the Meadowlands, arrived as slightly different versions ("Faster Gun" was on O.S. in a much different form, too). Several unreleased O.S. songs are planned for the expanded Abbott 1135 "EP." Last I spoke with Pedal Boy, he pretty much expected to be finished with the expanded 1135 by the end of the year. 2005, that is.

So, I'll try to get on the O.S. thing with "Wrens like" quickness and YSI around a few copies. :)

Sorry, I have to add one more because 5 is just not enough.

Peter Gabriel - Up

It's probably my favorite album of the decade so far and the only reason why I didn't include it on my initial list was because I tried to make it as diverse as possible. Talking Heads already took the spot for "artsy 80s rock band/artist" and best album ever made (Remain In Light) beats best album of the decade (Up).

If you don't have anything past 1990, then the first two that come to mind are Nirvana - In Utero and Radiohead - OK Computer. The most essential albums of the 90s.

Also:

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Luna - Penthouse
Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
Tindersticks - Tindersticks (I)

Radiohead - Ok Computer
Phish - Rift
Bjork - Post
Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Neko Case - Blacklisted

Let Love In is (in my opinion) the best choice for 1990's Nick Cave, with Henry's Dream coming in second. The rest should be pre 90's. Well that's a lie. The Boatmans Call is good, and the new double disc was surprisingly great. However, I prefer when they sounded like The Birthday Party. I just can't let go of the past, I guess.

and actually, the first Nick Cave cd I ever owned was Murder Ballads. Can't forget that. That's spectacular. Stagger Lee, audio, and video, is amazing. The only song I really couldn't stand was Henry Lee, the whole "la lalalala lee" really got on my nerves.

Seriously, invest in Nick Cave, Tom Waits, hmm.. Mayan Temples by Sun Ra is 1990, I believe. That's a spectacular album and it should be available on CD, whereas a ton of his material isn't.
Definitely buy Ween cds. I'll edit this tomorrow with specifics.

I almost put Henry's Dream in my five. Very underrated album, and to me the best Nick Cave of the 90s.
