That Tom Dolby album is frightfully under-rated. Make sure to get the original Harvest pressiing rather than the Capital US version. They left "Leipzeig" and "Urges" off the US album.

Dolby's great.

Yeah it did. I don't know what SK's source is for thinking it was 1983. But its a bit strange that a hell of a lot of critics voted for it in the 1982 Village Voice poll if it were 1983.

Imperial Bedroom finished #1 that year with Shoot out the Lights #2. Those two are still BIG omissions in my mind.

I still haven't heard that Richard Hell. I take it you don't agree with Todd and SK that its particularly strong?

I thought it sounded like the typical case of a band blowing all their good ideas on the debut, then scrounging to come up with something close to an album's worth of songs for the follow-up. Half-baked and tired would be my description. I mean, it's got Quine on it so it's not a complete waste of time, but it's close.

And I agree about the omissions of EC, R & L Thompson, and Prince. It's an Obner scandal, I tell ya.

Naw, it's cool. Duran Duran was a glossy-sheen "fuck you" pick that has obviously blown up in my face. That Mission of Burma record is fucking seminal, and there's no reason to punish poor Richard Hell.

This is a tough one with no real standouts.

I'll be voting other, with the nod going to Richard & Linda Thompson's Shoot Out The Lights.

Other contenders are from Dream Syndicate, XTC, Roxy Music, Sioouxsie & the Banshees, Lou Reed and Gregory Isaacs.

I don't know a lot from this year, but I also like:

Mission of Burma - Vs.
XTC - English Settlement
Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Brian Eno - On Land
Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom

And I hate to admit it, but I don't think I've heard Thriller in its entireity since I was a little kid. Even still, and as great as the singles from that album are, I doubt I'd pick it over Nebraska.

worst year yet for me. i really haven't heard a lot from this year...and the one's i've heard aren't what i'd consider "great", so i won't be voting.

if anything, this re-inforces the need for me to get over my mis-conception of bruce springsteen being all about "born in the usa" "glory days", etc. and the mental images of all the NJ white trash that lived in my freshman dorm at the university of maryland that overplayed brooooooooooooce all the time.

Well you can add +1 to the Prince column. That's probably one of my Top 20 favourite albums of all time.

Best line: "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth" - Let's Pretend We're Married.

I guess I'm gonna go with Nebraska. I don't necessarily like all of the versions on the album, but "Atlantic City" is one of my favorite Bruce songs and "Mansion On The Hill" and "Highway Patrolman" are up there as well.

Again, along with The Goast of Tom Joad, not one of my fav Bruce albums even if I do like the songs themselves; I guess I like my Bruce all jingly and electric.
