they are really pushing sending me to the Corcoran. acting like all will be okay if I go there.... when it costs under 10 thousand less than Pratt.
In the long run Pratt will cost me about 160,000 dollars, plus interest if I take out loans.
We'll see how it goes.
VCU has an art program.

I was just talking to a student who goes for art, (at VCU) and he showed me the majority of his work..
and it suuuu

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

u-u-uuuuuuucked.

No offense. I mean. I want some competition. I want to know it's tough to get in, tough to get through, and I got in and got through it.
I don't get that feeling from VCU.
Of course one mans work does not speak for everyone.
I just.. It's not like I want to leave VA. I love Richmond for many reasons. I wouldn't see Blue Milks family often for a while. I may not see Blue Milk ever again if we choose schools in different areas. I won't go to Plan 9 for a long time. My family would be far away, my cats would be far away.
I don't know. It's just the experience, the idea.. The connections i'd get. The opportunity. It's been my top school since the experience at the Corcoran (portfolio day) when I passed for portfolio in person.
I never thought i'd have the chance but I was proven wrong.
I think it would be good for me. Plus it has twice the amount of students as the Corcoran. Corcoran housing is so much better though. You get a fully furnished apartment, your own room, too.
I don't know. We'll see once the other three acceptance/rejection letters come in.

Your concerns are high school concerns (boyfriend, record stores, distance from family, cats). Listen to your elders. If Corcoran is only $10k cheaper than Pratt and your parents would help pay for it, it just sounds like they want you close to home which is selfish on their part. I can understand where they are coming from, but I've always thought parents that want their kids to stay close to home are a bit selfish.

haha, my ultimate concern is money.

i just want to go, though.

where is the corcoran? in DC.
I fell in love during my interview. The housing is so appealing.
My interview went so well. I love the park right across the street, it's full of ducks. It's pretty close to the National Gallery and Hirshhorn, 45 minutes from Georgetown (walking)... that's where the other campus is.

It's great. Pratt is still number one, though.

My parents used to tell me they couldn't wait until I moved out and got away. They were kidding, I think...
but I mean. I'm not leaving for the rest of my life. I'm not even leaving the east coast.
I'd be a few hours away.
I don't know. My concerns aren't childish. Missing my family, my second family, my best friend, and my two other best friends (my cats)..
Personal connections are the most important things in life, and throwing away potentially great relationships and friendships (not with my family, obviously) is not something to weigh lightly.
Nomatter where I go, happiness of myself and others is what I ultimately hope to obtain. If I am not happy, my experience will suck.
If they aren't happy, I won't be happy, and my experience will suck.

I just want everyone to be happy. So I hope I make a good choice.

edit: Although I have learned that it's good to get advice from "elders" who are not your parents (i.e. have experience but no vested interest in what you do).

That may soon be more true than you think when your not living with your parents and there pool, new tv and what not. Even if you go to your second choice school its still out of the price range of most kids going to college, just to keep things in perspective.

Thats the thing about art schools, the only real job they can prepare you for is a job as an art teacher. /quote]

that's not even close to true.
you can be 100's of things that have nothing to do with being a fine artist.

most of which you don't need an expensive fine art degree to do

Congrats, CP. I read the first page, and skipped ahead to the end. But it's very, very cool to have gotten in. It is a validation of your talent - don't forget that, nor write it off with modesty. It's an achievement.

Also, do please weigh out the money angle vey carefully. Talk to them beofre you commit - ask to speak with recent grads doing something you think you might do. Do they make enough to pay back what you'll owe? Just be careful is all.

You are an artist. Pratt is a top art school. You've been accepted to Pratt. You want to go to Pratt.

Go to Pratt.

If your parents won't pay for it, sell some forgeries of masterworks to Japanese businessmen.

i don't know, apparently i'm going in for a BFA for painting.
i'm not in to art therapy anymore.
I'd love to get my masters and become a professor.

I'm not sure though.

Reminds me that the Milwaukee Area Technical College (a two-year school, obviously) used to be Milwaukee Institute of Technology (MIT... uh oh, confusion sprang from that).

also, interest free loans here now :)

We used to have these as well, but too many folks "of a certain age" - including, cough cough, my aunt, who lives in a ginormous house in Delafield - defaulted, opting not to pay them back as they were entitled to the money, not borrowing it.

But I won't hold my five percent (?) interest, which is low, I'll admit, against any of those "of a certain age" on this board... Whom, I'm sure, paid back their loans anyway.

ayah? tentoze? harry?

Proud of you kiddo.

Apply for scholarships, work study, etc. It's your degree and your life, go where you want/can, and you can go where you want... it's not just debt, it's investment.

And there's plenty of money out there for the taking.

Just some general advice -- if you do decide to go "student loan", whatever you do, don't miss a payment, even if it means only paying the minimum for a while. If I understand correctly, all the rules are off if you miss a payment.

Oh, and of course, congrats!

congrats!

fill out a FAFSA. deadline is march 1st (if you want to be first in line for the 06-07 school year). chances are you'll get more money that way.

try looking into work study and cal grants as well.

I suppose the financial discussion is moot until you apply for financial aid...

we did the fafsa, pratt is supposed to send me my "financial aid reward" or some shit in the next few weeks. i'm applying for a VMFA (va museum of fine arts) grant of 4,000 or 2,000 dollars. i am also applying for the NAHS 20,000 dollars or something to that extent scholarship.
i'm also going to do essay scholarships as much as i hate them.
