Maybe you stayed on the beaten path or dined their equivalent of 'upscale' restaurants, but it's practically on every menu. All joints (seedy or proper) I ventured offered a version of phad thai. Pretty much a staple appetizer or side dish, to be sure.

yeah, did i mention i was only there for four days?

Even in the restaurants that did not have it on the menu, it's probably assumed. It's the same thing with Indian restaurants -- there are some staple dishes that are just assumed (Chicken Tikka Masala, for example, I found out was offered at my favourite restaurant, even though it was not on the menu).

It's a desert -- mango with sticky rice is very popular, custard with sticky rice is my personal favourite.

So I went in this Jamaican/Cuban place but the rasta dude behind the counter hadnt gotten around to making the main courses yet...dunno, that seemed a little shady so I politely declined his offer to "whip me up a cuban sandwich"

ended up three doors down at a barbecue and sandwich joint. Very good. I'll be back.

I had chili, a salad and water.

Dov and I are chatting about cheese though, so I'll probably go raid the kitchen any minute.

nice edit...

Felt I was being too harsh. It is comforting to know that you're bothered enough to drop a bomb like 'nice edit'. Now say something clever that would elicit high 5's from your Ph.D cronies.

jesus, what the hell did i ever do you.

the comment i made about only being there for four days was supposed to have a smilie after it, because of my sheepish realization that i hadn't been there long enough to express anything other than my initial observation.

Nothing. Sorry for being rude. I thought you were having a go. To be fair, I didn't see your smiley and I found the 'nice edit' comment to be a bit snide. Thought the gloves were off. Guess I jumped the gun.

no worries. i didn't put in a smiley because, frankly, they make me uncomfortable, and are often too smiley-y. :) <--- see?

Sigh. Another potentially good fight gone to waste. You kids had the beginnings of something special there and you threw it away.

Hey Kabob, what's your favorite local Thai? Noodle Boat out here in Issaquah is excellent, but my wife and I are always looking for new good Thai places to try :)

Oh, man. If you've never had Thai Tom it's an experience. It's on the Ave and it's super tiny and always packed. You usually have to wait about 1/2 to 45 min to get a seat. Across the bar is the grill, and you watch him (not Tom anymore) cook up everything. He's a real artist and a joy to watch. The food is really the definition of perfection. Their curries are unmatched in this area (the USA!), I'm certain.

But since that place is so hard to get in to all the time I go to a place on 42nd just off the Ave a couple blocks up from my apt, called Little Thai. Their food is only just a fraction down from Thai Tom, but the place is quiet and spacious and prompt. I go there maybe 2 or 3 times a week.

The university district is chock full of ridiculously amazing restaurants. I pity anyone who's never tasted the falafel from Aladdin. Oh, I love this area.

You guys should come into town some evening and we'll have an obner dinner. We can invite Geoduck too. And whoever else is in the area that wants to come.
