If we're going to include bands with the limited output of Interpol, then I would definitely have to put Arcade Fire, Animal Collective and Manitoba on this list above them

I don't know why you're equating Animal Collective with "limited output" They've nearly tripled the output of Interpol. I don't think Arcade Fire or Manitoba/Caribou really deserve a mention yet.

Well that's a first. Also, add TVOTR to the list of low-output (to date) bands whose boots Interpol are not fit to lick.

Why the Interpol and Marah hate?

I like what I have heard from TVOTR, but I rarely find myself sitting there thinking "I wanna hear their album" or, given my current moniker, EP.

I did however put Turn on the Bright Lights in my stack for this week,

Sorry, I don't know why I threw Animal Collective under that heading either, except just to say that according to the criteria I think bands should meet for a "greatest band" title, they are objectively far more deserving than Interpol.

Manitoba has as many albums as Interpol and 2 that are better than any of Interpol's. To be fair, I just don't like Interpol.

Senator, the Marah hate dates back to a benefit show they played at in NYC, my first exposure to them. I had no idea who they were, only that they were annoying as hell on stage and their songs bored the piss out of me. I was agog when I found out it was the band so oft-trumpeted on the Ob.

You might kinda like that Caribou album although it's not really what I think of as "your thing". It's some nicely layered psyche-pop.

Maybe. On the one hand, i would say Manitoba/Caribou is RIYL Animal Collective, but they lack many of the qualities that make you hate AC. But they are similarly psychadelic and optimistic.

Yeah, on second though I think I have heard some stuff on mixes and definitely on kexp or sat. radio. Not enough to really make an up/down judgement though.

I could compare them to other things he does like (or used to like) like OTC and other E6 stuff. Caribou isn't quite as theatrical as Animal Collective.

Interesting side note: Animal Collective does not perform live in any kind of masks or costumes (at least not when I saw them). Manitoba, however, did, but I don't know if Caribou still does.

Who else would you have in there, and who would you replace?

Kings of Leon, Ike Reilly, and Marah -- I mean, I like Ike, but none of these guys bring much to the table other than enthusiastically retreading well-worn ground. Compare with Spoon, on the other hand, who despite having a consistent sound across albums and being well grounded in rock and/or roll tradition, have blazed new trails and constantly redefined themselves. Same with Wilco. The obvious band that isn't on this list and should be, despite Radcliffe's curmudgery, is Radiohead. In terms of output, influence, live show, personality (meaning theirs is well-defined), and any other category, I think they should obviously top the list, but they should at least be ON it.

Except that Radiohead isnt AMERICAN.

HAHA!!!! that made me almost spit coffee on my computer. that was funny.

as far as my pick would go....

i say wilco. spoon is a close 2nd. granted that i was a bit late to the wilco game, but i'm really starting to love them a LOT. am i the only one that likes a ghost is born?

haven't heard a note of drive-by truckers, marah, ike so they don't count for me.

and the others only have 2-3 albums out, imho, i don't think that can really "define" a band being great just YET.

The Fleshtones--they've been at it for 30 years, and no one does rock and roll better.

However, both have a song about bees on their last albums.

I actually fully understand this. I hate The Roots based on their shitty as shit of a shitty show.

I'm one of the "out of touch" types that really likes A Ghost is Born.

Also, the Walkmen.

I like A Ghost I Born about much as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

I did vote Wilco here because they're excellent live.

I was a little disappointed when it was first released, actually didn't want to listen to it much... then heard them do the songs live a couple times, and the album kicked in... like it. Saw Tweedy perform the songs from Ghost live acoustic, and they seemed like old friends. Its a great album... I think they need to strip down the production.

Good thread. Although having read the thread title without opening it, I immediately thought of Grand Funk Railroad, and now am ashamed.

Out of your list, i have to go with Wilco, for the same reasons as billyg, except swap out Being There for Summerteeth.

This is similar to how I feel. The songs really showed up when played live. I now prefer it to YHF.

I haven't really followed this thread closely. But I'll say this. I want no part of an America in which Animal Collective is our best band.
