I buy almost every album I get now used. It's just easier for me to browse the used bins a few months down the road or go to the annual Homer's .99 sale every year. I pick up at least 20 EP's and LP's for what one new LP and EP would cost me regularly. I think you are being a smart consumer and insuring that an already exorbinantly priced new album doesn't go up in cost.
I figure I save something like 200-500 dollars a year on not buying new cd's and with that I attend a show, buy merch and drink. Thus I'm supporting more people locally with my cash than I would be buying an album at Best Buy.

I think I understand the point of view now. It does make sense to in fact actually buy used. If it is true that most bands get no money from cd sales, then you are in fact not slighting them but are actually stickin' it to the label itself that sucks consumers dry.

I buy stuff used a lot too but not of stuff I have a download of.

so when you do buy used, do you then eventually buy it new to support the artist/label?

No. I don't usually buy a copy (new or used) if I have a burned copy either.

I don't think think liner notes are worth $7 though so I always assumed anyone buying a replacement copy was doing it to support the band/label.

It just seems inconsistent with the response everyone seems to make in threads about downloading that they always buy the stuff they like after downloading to support the artist If you're buying used, the artist doesn't get a penny from the sale and neither does the label.

I completely understand this, but I think, at least with me, that it's most likely that I'll buy some of a band's catalog used and some of it new. I can't think of any bands where I bought everything of theirs that I wanted entirely used. F'r instance: I just got into the Posies (I know, I know - why did I wait so long?!) and bought Dear 23, Frosting on the Beater, and Amazing Disgrace for about $5 each, used. Yesterday I finally picked up Every Kind of Light - a new copy. In addition, I'll likely pick up solo discs by the guys at some point and, given that I can't find them locally, I'll probably just order them new.

The band and members will see my money somehow - the alternative to me buying used is the same that supports file-sharing - I may never have gotten into them at all had it not been for used CDs. I don't feel the slightest bit guilty, and no one should.

I generally don't get burned CDs from others (most of my friends either seem to own the stuff I own or stuff I don't care about), but I do purchase plenty of used CDs. New CDs that I buy are ripped (<-- WAV files made with EAC) and copied and put on eBay.

I would probably still support bands in a live setting if venues were smoke-free and I didn't have tinnitus.

i said 50-75% of the time. my cd purchasing habits have dwindled WAY down in the past few months only because of where i work ... i get so many damn cd's a day that i don't even know what to do with them anymore. it's kind of spoiled me so now i don't really bother with purchasing or cd shopping or have had the time to really ... but i have a hard enough time keeping up with stuff i like as opposed to the crap that's here.

i'm going to change that very soon though. or at least try to.
