There are a lot of people who were molested as kids who would never think to molest another kid. They know how awful it was for them and they break the cycle. I don't doubt that every fucker in prison has a sad story. Or at least a good 50% of them (how many people knew a rich kid with a somewhat normal family in high school who always got into trouble?). OH...and we're talking about way less than half of prisons being that good family kid gone bad type. More like 10-20% max and that's being generous. Hell, over half of prisoners are functionally illiterate. Most of the kids from the "right side-of-the tracks" get their shit together, with some help from family and friends, before it escalates to the realm of long term prison sentances. That, and judges tend to slap the wrists and toss around fines to kids from "good families" while they toss kids from the streets into jail.

Prisons are mostly full of kids from impoverished backgrounds where they had little to no parental guidance and abuse runs rampant. They are those that we have cast aside as a society. I belive they should be punished for the shit they do...don't get me wrong. But, I also don't think we shouldn't harbor any illusions that these aren't mostly people who were fucked from the git go.
