i hate samples. They are shortcuts to thinking.

(there are, of course, notable exceptions, blah blah blah covering my ass)

You can say the quality hasn't changed...which is totally subjective and argueable. But, the sounds are vastly different....just a fact. So, yeah, the music has changed.

And, College Droppout was a good album, although I thought the follow-up fell flat. May have to check out that Lupe Fiasco.

I like some hip hop, and would like to get into it more. But it bothers me that so much of what is popular now in the genre has really horrible, negative lyrics. All of the violence and glorifying selling drugs gets old pretty quickly. Not too mention the constant disrespect towards women.

Plus, there's something reprehensible about people who got rich by making art constantly sending out this message to kids that the real way to success is selling drugs/violence/doing whatever you want.

I think those comments officially make me an old man.

couldja pash me mah teef, shunny?

I don't seek out the indie stuff, because I really don't care for the genre in general much. I still dig old school RUN-DMC, Beasties, Public Enemy, et al. The rap videos that I see on MTV, MTV2 and Fuse make me wanna (people just don't understand, how I can just kill a man).

and sometimes a strait up loop is creative simply by the context that it's used in, or taken from.

Hyphy is obviously better. Crunk? Flimshaw! Yay area, what!

My relationship with hip hop is as follows. Once or twice a year, my friend and I will drive down to San Diego to visit our friends there, and listen to hip hop the whole way there and back because she's big into hip hop. Then I'll get back home and start playing all my fav's -- heiroglyphics, public enemy, de la soul, and some dj stuff like kid koala. This will go on for a few weeks, then all of a sudden I'll get bored with it again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'm I the only person who thinks that old school hip-hop sucks when compared to modern stuff? When ever I hear old school stuff it just sounds corny. I don't think Hip-Hop came into it's own till Illmatic.

There was a point when I made an effort, but I've pretty decided that I just can't follow every genre of music. If something comes across my spectrum that sounds interesting, I'll check it out--otherwise, I feel like I'm a lost cause for hip hop.

I'm young you're old, but that aside I'm not saying all the old stuff was terrible, some of it's good like Rakim. I think that just in terms of beats and rhyme schemes and flows the new stuff is far ahead. I mean I'm not talking about nelly or 50 cent or any of that. Back in the day the beats were a lot simpler, the rhymes were a lot simpler, etc. I just think that it's evolved.

I'm glad I missed this thread back then....not gonna bother reading all of it now. For the most part people on this board aren't into hip-hop/rap, but the ones that are into it know what's up, and I respect their opinions on the genre. There is good stuff being made these days, but I think overall the quality of what is coming out now is down compared to even 4 years ago. There are ebbs and flows and I think stuff will get better eventually, but I'd agree it's somewhat of a low-point currently.

Illmatic is probably my top one or two hip-hop albums ever, but I gotta say you need to be schooled on the genre if you think this was the start of hip-hop.

I dig it...wouldn't say it's the best right now... Really, a lot of what comes out nowadays is mixtapes and individual tracks on blogs and shit....you really need to be into the genre to search it out and see what's out there. Otherwise people just hear what's on top of the charts and that's just not a good indication of what's really going on in hip-hop.

In all honesty the best thing I've heard this year is probably Eminem's verse on Drake's track Forever ...that verse is amazing.

Not the start of Hip-Hop. I know that the old stuff was important as a foundation, I believe that Illmatic is the beginning of modern hip-hop, at least how I think of it.
