I agree, and I too make a point to hug them and calm them down afterwards. It's sort of a way to bond. They always know I love them, but they also know when they disappoint me or make me angry.

I think Mike's right about this being a regional thing.

Yep. I'm dumb as a brick. Good thing I make up for it by beating the crap out of my kids.

I was thinking about this thread the other day. After having another 2+ years of parenting under my belt, I find that the levels of required discipline vary with the child.

I've got one kid that only responded to the spanking, another that would respond when I exhibited that my feelings were hurt, and another that responds when I make a sad face. My oldest son is by far the strongest personality and free thinker, which got him into so much trouble in the first place. It's pretty awesome to watch him learn and understand the consequences of his actions.

I don't remember this thread. I have to agree with ayah. I think spanking may be effective in a short term quick behavioral response, but overtime I think it will break down communication. In some ways I thinks its an easy out to not deal with a situation as an actual communication and respect issue.

I've got 2 kids, boy 5.5 , girl 2.5. The boy has always had an even temperament and responds well to reason or removing him from a situation. The girl is much more willful and has caused us to try different things. Removing her from a situation works best.

Oh and I got my lashes both verbal and physical. All it did was create less respect the older more independent I got.

My daughter is 19 months old. On two occassions, my wife and I have been to the point of frustration, that we slapped our daughters hand....Not hard, but enough to get her to notice....She cried....We wanted to cry....We will figure out other ways to discipline her when needed.

I got swats on the butt when I was little but no full on hitting or beating....I don't agree with it as well...There are other ways to get your point across...

Although the combination of child violence and Jebus should keep the anti-depressant industry hale and hearty through these difficult economic times.

I really don't understand this notion that hitting your kids makes them more well-behaved in the long run. I can pretty much look at the people I grew up with and the ones that got hit the most turned out to be the most aggressive and the biggest assholes and most prone to violence of anyone.

Might makes right is really a pretty shitty lesson to teach your kids.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to beat the crap out of some kids for kicks myself. Sounds fun and all that. But, I wouldn't expect it to accomplish anything.

Yeah, I like to hit people and watch 'em shut the fuck up too. I just prefer to do it with adults who at least have a chance of fighting back.

I can't fathom spanking at this point. I still remember it being considered acceptable and necessary when I was a kid, but I look at my kids and think it's still hitting and I can't do that to them.

I don't need spank (edited out hit) him anymore. He's old enough that he responds to reason. After I talk to him, I can see the wheels spinning in his head and then all of a sudden he gets it and apologizes or brings it into a discussion for his own betterment.

The other 2 kids haven't required the level of discipline that #1 needed.

= my experience as a kid.

I mouthed off one time too many and got spanked (really lightly, actually, didn't even hurt, it was just more embarassing than anything) and just the thought of it was all I needed after that.

I was spanked and I am not aggressive.
When I spanked my kids it was never fun and I was never proud of it. I was more upset that I let myself get that angry and disappointed that I couldn't find a better way to communicate with the child. Some kids are harder to get through to and some parents need a lot of refinement to their other techniques.
