Not only did a different White Stripes proposal get picked
Not only did a proposal for Operation Ivy's "Energy" (the album I was heavily leaning toward pitching until a month out) get picked
But a proposal for goddamn Vampire Weekend made the cut.

Sonofabitch.

Hello Mr. Bottle of Wine, so nice to see you. It's been a while, no?

this series has jumped the shark.

disagree. i think it'll be a fairly interesting read.

more importantly, this will be awesome...

2 Live Crew – As Clean As They Wanna Be

i would rather read the britney spears one than that.

and why would anyone write about the edited version of that 2 live crew?

these would interest me.

AC/DC – Highway to Hell
The Cars – The Cars
Digital Underground – Sex Packets
Main Source – Breaking Atoms
NWA – Straight Outta Compton
Portishead – Dummy
Suicide – Suicide

I mean, I can see where there'd be a lot to write about with that 2 Live Crew record; the incredibly overzealous cultural backlash, Luke basically saying "fuck everyone" and then the clean version of the record coming out.

More using it as a lense for social mores at the time than a deep artistic investigation. I think the praise and sales from the Celine book have swung Continuum very much in that direction when it comes to selecting topics. Can't blame em if that's what moves books off the shelves.

Lots of my listmania in the semi-finals listing, so I'm optimistic about the selection. Sucks for Chad, though... especially since the same album was picked. Sorry, bro.

Chad - did they give you any more feedback than a form rejection letter, or did you just learn about this via the list being released? FUGGERS!

I am not entirely familiar with the series, but has anyone done any of the following yet:
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Boo Radleys - Giant Steps
Flying Burrito Brothers - Gilded Palace Of Sin
?

It was a polite form rejection. The guy gave his day to day email address and said if we really want feedback on rejections we can email him, but it'd likely take a while to respond. Which is fine - it's a huge project I'm sure. I'mma wait a few weeks and send him something once the initial onslaught has passed.

My only question would be what the other guy had in his proposal v. yours.

As you know, and what took me too long to figure out, is that the life of a freelance writer is one of near-constant rejection.

I have found one of the tricks to this series is not to do a straight-forward analysis of the album. Obviously, John Darnielle is an exception because of his musical work, but he wrote a novella about Sabbath, Graffiti Bridge talks about race and growing up in the 90s, and the Celine Dion is about just odd.

Dunno if this round found itself going in that direction as well, but I'm figuring they are probably looking for more than a biography, or "behind the music" style book.

Sorry to hear about the rejection Chad. Hope you get a response back when you write the 33 1/3 guy, and next time you get it. The cool thing is, the series is soliciting entries every few years, so at least you have another chance.

I would like to see any other Ween album EXCEPT Chocolate and Cheese get written about.

I just found out that my high school friend J. wrote the Murmur book. I also found out that he lives near me, so we may get together and play sometime.

Good luck, Chad!

I was hoping for a few more "weird" choices...

Also, am I dreaming or did I just see something about the series being put on hold for "economic" reasons? Thought I saw it on Brooklyn Vegan or Largeheartedboy.

Of that list I'm interest in:

The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us
Dinosaur Jr: You're Living All Over Me
Grateful Dead - Closing of Winterland
Johnny Cash - American Recordings
Kiss - Destroyer
Lou Reed - Metal Music Machine
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night
Operation Ivy - Energy
Slint - Spiderland
Television - Marquee Moon
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Ween - Chocolate and Cheese

but will probably only buy 1 or 2 of them.

Yeah, I don't know what that whole thing concerning "the future of the series" was about.
