I can see the DMB, but you are gonna say Phish and Dead phans are more annoying than say a John Mayer/Maroon 5/Nickelback/Hoobastank/Linkin Park/Train fan. Come off it.

Worst 2 songs

John Mayer - No Such Thing

Hoobastank - The Reason

Now that you mention Train, Drops of Jupitor is a really bad song as well. Not quite worst 2 material but probably worst 15-20.

Train - brings new depth and breadth to "derivative." Seriously. Every one of those goddam overplayed singles on the radio is immediately identifiable as a patchwork of several well-known songs, usually Beatles. And they get rich form it. No justice.

Pagoda, you have to remember that some people's stock and trade is to deal in generalisations about things that they have no undestanding of.

It always makes me chuckle to think about a guy who makes his living as a musician throw dedicated fans under the bus who would/could put money in his pocket.

Chucle, chuckle.

No Such Thing= Some of the coolest/ most fun to play acoustic guitar riffs in the last 5 to 7 years. Much, much more inventive than 95% of music you'll hear on poular radio.

The Reason= If I hear a NOTE of this song anymore, I will have to stuff myself down the garbage disposal. And I NEVER listen to the radio.

i'm with phil on this one, if only because, while john mayer/maroon 5 fans are annoying, they are usually girls who don't feel particularly passionate about the music in the first place. they're not going to berrate you about the intrinsic value of lyrics like "apples make applesauce", i.e. they are easily ignored. a true phish fan, even if you could get him to be quiet there'd still be the smell to contend with.

So you are calling me, Pagoda, and Ish (among others) smelly? Because speaking for myself, I am a true fucking Phish fan. And I don't smell. Actually I look and smell great. You could pick up a tip or eight.

edit: that goes for you too ayah.

2. The Eagles-Hotel California
-Definitely the epitome of overrated, coked out, wanking bullshit songs...Don Henley Must Die

jokes i get, but for serious, people bagging on Phish because their fans are smelly is about the stupidest bullshit ever thrown out.

If you don't like Phish or the Dead, fine. But to just throw out generalisations about a bands fans based on some picture you have in your mind is asinine. I mean based on the marianfudge/cmj/photo page, I would say that we "indie" rockers are as rough and tumble looking a bunch as I ever saw at any Phish show.

Yail took this fight to new heights. Most Jam band fans are pretty damn good fans. The typical Phish fan is typically just a college age dude or a upper middle class northeasterner. The depths of snobbery are pretty deep on this board.

Upon reflection though I did see numerous people whose 2004 show list included seeing phish (me included as I flew to Wisconsin to see them).

I dunno, knowing too many meatheaded Phish fans that also like nickelback has skewed that perception.

Thanks for weighing in dumbass.

I love the fact that people are offended by one's band success. I guess if they "sold out" it would be easier; but no, they just went out and made a fucking mount everest of money playing whatever the fuck they wanted.

By the way, I agree with Busty: I don't get why people hate John Mayer so much. I mean, I don't particularly like the guys music, but he can fucking rip on guitar (check out his live shit, oh y'all wouldn't do that----its not indie enough), has a great respect of the history of music and has, without a doubt, paid his fucking dues in the music business. But, his shit got popular and is (admitedly) cheesy. And?

Typical fucking American attitude these days to hate people that are succesful because you have jealousy or whatever for folks that have worked harder than you.

Rant over. Out.

How about instead of resorting to "smelly", we say this:

Phish, Widespread, String Cheese, etc. fans are annoying because the neo-hippie concert culture surrounding all that shit is really tired and annoying. Phish stickers/ T-shirts/ posters/ etc, are really fucking ugly as is most merch by any jam band as is the whole tie-dye Dead aesthetic. Combine that with Birks and Tevas, incessant hacky-sacking, , horribly commodified, generic "drug culture" represented by the afformentioned tie-dye shit and pictures of "aliens" and 'shrooms, and upper-middle class white suburban college kids driving sticker-laden SUVs. It's remained pretty much intact since around 1994, and it's irritating. It's also fairly prevalent among the typical polo-shirt-and-khakis fratboy crowd who are pretty annoying in their own right.

Yes those are stereotypes. That's what happens when you make generalizations. They're still based on a whole lot of truth. I know this doesn't describe every Phish fan, but it fits a lot of the ones I've known.

I used to be a straight up Spreadhead in college. I've seen em over 20 times in several states and it was ALWAYS a damn good time.

I still love their recorded output even though I don't break it out that often. Good beer drinkin, summer music to me. I think it's just something that you grow up in. If I were to try to get into them now it would never happen, my tastes have changed too much. But I have too many good memories with these type bands to ever hate on them.

I will say this:

I've had a great time on drugs.

as a phish fan, i'd say i agree with most of your assessment of the "scene". 75% of the "phan's" i've seen at shows are annoying kids who care more about the drugs than the music. i'd much rather listen to my live phish discs than go to a show and endure that.

i also wouldn't lump that same fanbase in with the dead.

Why, I'm dumb for stating something I notice in Phish fans. Besides, I wasn't criticizing anyone for "selling out" or "making money" I was criticizing their fans for being meatheads that have bad taste.

Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McDouchefuck

Seriously, there couldn't be a shittier, more gimmicky song to have risen so quickly to the top of the charts. The guy fucking 'woooed' his way through the chorus of a shit raggae-lite assfest about just being happy. There's a reason why someone shot Ronald Reagan, why Molly Ringwald is currently unemployed and I swear the Don't Worry, Be Happy guy will get what's coming to him (with interest) in due time.

You're right about it being a shitfest, but he meant it to be ironic. Failed at that miserably, but he meant we should worry and we shouldn't be happy. Doesn't make the song any better, of course.
