Leaving in a little bit to go see her tonight in DC. Both nights at the Sixth & I Synagogue are sold out.

Tonight's show will be streamed on NPR if anyone is interested:

Live On NPR.org Beginning At 9 p.m. ET

If anyone has the ability to record it, I'd be much obliged.

Here's an article with pics as well:

I know I'm beating my dead horse here, but this really looks cool to y'all? Looks like something my grandmother would drag me to spend time with her.

the show last monday in montreal was incredible, do not miss a chance. this was the first time i'd seen her. granted i was already in love, but i left enchanted. she truly transcends song. the band just embellishes. it's mastery effortlessly. i was seriously confused on my first listen of "have one on me". now i love it. i listen in small doses, so to never wear out even one of its 18 tracks. best of the year, to be.

There was a dude covering "Bridges and Balloons" in the subway the other day. He had decent chops and a good voice, but I still wanted to punch him in the gut.

Incredible show. She's hilarious as well. Her quips between sets of songs was definitely a shock considering the music she makes. I was in love with the music to begin with, but definitely have a better appreciation now.

Moore Brothers opened. My wife and I just couldn't get what they were up to. One of the bros came out and sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" backwards, and then they jumped into a somewhat Simon and Garfunkel harmony style. We kept wondering if they meant people to laugh at the lyrics, or if they were just bad. Who knows. Glad they didn't play long.

Joanna came out first and did a few songs solo on the harp. Absolutely stunning. Then she introduces the band, which I have to say is one of the most talented backing bands I've seen for a solo artist on tour. Neil Morgan on drums/percussion was fantastic. Really, kinda wish I would've picked up his newest voice/drums LP while I was there. Did pick up the 3 LP set of Newsom's newest though. Excellent packaging. Think the Sonic Youth reissue deluxes on vinyl. Same style box and nice booklet. No wonder that thing was hella expensive to pre-order. Only $25 at the show.

She did a great mix of songs, and really blew both my wife and I away. Too bad the benches at Sixth & I Synagogue are hard. Could've sat there all night otherwise. Her hands on the harp moving back and forth were hypnotizing. Both of us were saying how at points we were just mesmerized by her singing and movements.

I really wish some of you naysayers could see her live. She's not at all like you'd expect, and you'd most certainly appreciate her and her band's talent.

How about I just take your word for it, and appreciate that they're talented without shelling out cash and time on music I haven't ever liked?

One of my drummers keeps her new one in the truck all the time, and it seriously might end the friendship.

We don't all have to like the same shit.

that was exactly my impression of it – enchanted even by watching the vibration of the harp strings from the chapel pews – but another positive is that she seems to be changing up the show from night to night, which i was curious about. in montreal, she began (night 2) solo at the piano. so that's good to know!

anyone record the webcast?

Wow, no coffee this morning? All I was saying was that she struck me as being incredibly different on stage than on record. It was a point I was making to bang home a point that even as someone who enjoys her music, I was taken aback at how her sound changed. I get that people don't like her music. I just felt like some people on the board who don't like her, might have enjoyed last night's show.

Jsh--yeah, talking to people who attended Monday's DC show they said that she had mixed it up some as well. I read that WashPo article on how somber the audience was Monday, and wondered how somber. Last night's crowd was how I expected it to be--utterly silent during the songs and then enthusiastic with applause after. She and Neil were pretty vocal, but probably to break the silence while she was tuning her harp, as she put it "vigilantly".

I had coffee, i just think it's wierd how her fans phrase their praise as if the non-fans are crazy. It's aggravating.

Pick another polarizing artist, say bjork for instance, and fans are cool with saying "i love her, but i get how she's not for everyone", but newsome fans seem like they're on a cultish mission.

First, I've never rec'd her to you, and the fact that you lump me in with someone else is just incredibly short-sighted. I don't think people who dislike her music are odd, and I realize she's not for everyone. Second, so what. Don't read it. You clicked into a thread about her.

Come on, I know you're a musician and a student/teacher of music, so you can appreciate that an artist on record can sound vastly different than live. If I recommended it, it was simply as a hey, maybe give it one more listen. If I offended you by saying that her non-fans are "naysayers" then sorry. But technically you are saying "no to her". If anything, have you read the people that dislike her music? Definitely more vocal and rude about it. It shouldn't really bother either party. I'm just surprised a simple concert review with a tagline to those who might've previously passed judgement on her elicited such a response.

i think she's a lot like bjork, and i understand why people don't like/get both of em. i'll take their share. i'd say joanna's even more fringe, and that's maybe why her listeners are more rabid cultists (not that i really get that impression, as many girls just with more wool).

Note: Used search to attempt to find original PopTodd thread, by "world's largest spiderweb" yielded no results.

As it goes, this new Newsome goodness reminded me of BillyG's only necessary contribution to this board. In reference to the pic -- not the one, below -- PT included, BeeG added, "Looks like the cover for Joanna Newsome's next record".

Damned if i know.

Probably because she's a hotbutton, and i was subjected all through sxsw when i really wanted to recuperate from a trip to st. louis with 70 high schoolers.

Still, not cool of me.

Thanks for accepting the apologies.
