And it's not like every time someone uses the word "pad", sanitary napkins are the first thing that come to mind. People just love to try to shoot holes in these things. "Oh man, Apple really blew it this time!" We'll see.

And this is why you'd never work in marketing.

Well clearly we're all smarter than Apple's marketing people.

Actually that reason comes in a distant second to the fact that I'd never want to work in marketing. I work dangerously close to marketing as it is.

After a few months and its established itself some, "Ipad" will lose the sanitary napkin association. I still think they could have done a lot better. They could have played something off the Newton theme, since its a distant relative.

i think its "okay"

it's definitely waaaaay better than a kindle. i like the price.

and i think that no multitasking isn't really a bad thing on small devices... at least on my iphone i've wanted to run more than one app at a time... and the apps themselves load instantly. and if you've really got some work to do I don't know why you wouldn't be sitting at a computer

all that said...
i'm not super impressed ... but i'd like to try one out.
not gonna buy it.

i would by a touchscreen imac though. please make one of those apple.

If they put Android or Linux on there, they might have something.

This kind of reminds me of the spoon thread. This is an apple product, thus, it's designed like an apple. Of course there are limitations. But it probaby works easily and well.

what a catastrophe. it's a total punt/admission to the rest of the market that "guess what, we don't have any bright ideas about tablets either" and just further reinforces their closed vertical model which hopes everything we call "computers" become appliances sooner than later.

fwiw, i'm a total unapologetic apple fanboy, so it's not like i'm one of those i'm a pc wimps. i'm just a regular apple wimp.

Catastrophe? I guess we'll know if that's the case in a few months, but it's not like this doesn't add anything to the whole tablet market. The Kindle and the Sony Reader don't do anything like what this thing does. Granted, it's just a really big iPod Touch with some reader capabilities and a better browsing experience, but doesn't that still go well beyond any current tablets?

I mean it looks like everyone was expecting Apple to unveil something other than a tablet. This is a tablet, not a laptop. If it had all the capabilities everyone here seems to think it should, it would be a laptop.

I don't even know why I'm going to great lengths to defend this thing. I won't be buying one, and I'm not an Apple fanboy by a long shot. I just like to argue with people when I think their arguments have huge inconsistencies or holes in them. So far, aside from the name being a minor blunder that the product could easily overcome, I just don't see a whole lot of truly valid points being made. Maybe some people actually expect a lot more from Apple than I do. If anything, their last big unveiling of the MacBook Air lowered my expectations - and this certainly trumps that - and slick devices that are essentially all about their design and engaging interfaces are all I really expect from them anymore. And the iPhone has already demonstrated that they can do just fine with that.

I just kinda half thought he was joking, but I guess I should know better.

Having read through that "Anti-Hype" article that Dalen posted, there are some valid points. Not being about to transfer files is a pretty big minus, and I'm assuming you're going to be limited to what you can transfer from you PC using iTunes - music, videos, and books. But knowing that this was going to at least be somewhat derived from the iPhone OS, this really shouldn't be too surprising.

I guess the biggest problem that I didn't realize is that an LCD screen does not make for an ideal reader. That may actually stop it from being a "Kindle killer".

Some things I think are just totally irrelevant. It doesn't have a camera? Does this thing look like it should have a camera? It's expensive? It costs roughly the same as a the first generation iPhones did, and those were priced well above the competition as well, just like nearly every Apple product ever. It's "closed computing"? Welcome to the world of Apple computers. Their approach to maintaining stability and quality has always been through imposing varying degrees of control.

actually, it would be open computing, very useful apps, multitasking capabilities, and incredible easy to customize and use.

i'm sure it's in the works.

"open" doesn't always equal good or even useful to a great majority of the computing world (not you, of course)

FTR, I have no dog in this fight, have no use for a kindle or an ipad, use a MacBook but also have to use VMWare fusion because I still like to run a bunch of Windows shit, etc.

So now I can carry all my music, books, and movies with me wherever I go and browse the internet? Sounds like the next step in the evolution of entertainment.

Wait, it doesn't wipe my ass with golden toilet paper?!?! Sucks.
