Pretty much everyone I trust has been saying that
Breaking Bad and
Justified are amazing, but I still haven't watched either. Supposedly between the two, it's pretty easy to build your own meth lab, though.
Everyone loves
Friday Night Lights, except for that one season. I don't know anyone that watches it, but the fact that it got Patton Oswalt watching a teen drama about football should be enough to convince anyone.
I think I've recommended both of these ages ago, but I still think they're worth checking out if you can find them.
Underbelly is an Aussie "true crime" drama. Each of the three seasons have been about a different era of crime, the first covering the gangland murders of the 90s, the second one was about the Mr. China heroin syndicate of the late 70s-early 80s, and the one that's airing now (or maybe just concluded?) is about King's Cross in the 80s. It's a pretty fucked up show, with more drugs/violence/nudity than pretty much anything I've ever seen in the states. The last season is pretty good, but the first two are amazing. Season 2 is up there with
The Wire in crime shows as far as I'm concerned. You might have to download this if you don't have the kind of rental place that is cool about bootlegs nearby.
The Sandbaggers is a British spy show from the early 80s or so. There are points of sensationalism, but for the most part it's a pretty sober look at the espionage world at the time, particularly the relationship between the US and UK and cold war defections and the like. There isn't that much action or violence, but a lot of strategy and planning and stuff like that. There's a lot of "this is a shit decision to make and I'm happy it's not me" type of situations going on.
Oh, and
Delocated starts up again next month, which you might like.
