I like Pere Ubu, but for me it's hard to put any band in that slot other than Devo.

For me Devo declined pretty steadily after their first album, but Pere Ubu continued to put out good material and still does.

I love Times New Viking.

And while I did pick something entirely different (Songs: Ohia) from what they did, I also think Screamin' Jay is a great choice.

I think everything devo has released other than maybe "Shout" is better than anything Pere Ubu ever released.

Yeah, you would think that.

I've been listening to New Traditionalists a lot lately, and I like it less each time I play it.

This thread has almost caused my eyeballs to dislodge from all the rolling, but these two entries in particular are killing me:

First thing that made the eyeballs roll was the very idea of this list.

Second thing was people actually doing it.

Oh, I forgot--I was making the list based on someone else's ideals. Stupid me.

As for this exercise, meh. But, I could never decide on Georgia. I mean, how do you put REM over Otis Redding? Or DBT over Allman Brothers? Little Richard over Gram Parsons?

Too many great bands/artists to list. Not to mention hip hop. Hell, I've been to more Widespread Panic concerts than any band I've ever seen.

Uh oh.

Yeah, I give up.

I'm definitely not going to force myself to pick a favorite band from states that haven't produced any music that I like, as far as I can tell.

Personally, I just picked artists which I felt I listened to/liked the best. If I was going for a strictly critical view of artists, then the list would look different. Sorry, but I listen to REM/DBT more than Otis and Little Richard. I own stuff from both, but don't listen to it as often.

Naw, I know you weren't. I was just responding to the quandary of putting DBT/REM above Otis.

Why do you do this?

Because when someone places Grand Funk Railroad alongside the MC5 and the Stooges IT PLACES GRAND FUNK RAILROAD ALONGSIDE THE MC5 AND THE STOOGES.

It's like saying your favorite vocalists are Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and Rick Astley. Or your favorite punk bands are the Clash, Fugazi, and Good Charlotte.

It's deeply offensive. I don't rag on you for your religion, why you got to rag on me for mine?
