Ok, I don't know too much about Bruce or the band's history with drugs, but this was the seventies...throughout the whole film it looks like they're either coked up out of their minds or coming down the next day...Bruce looks tiiiiiired.

i don't think there was anything going on at all. boss wouldn't have it.

Just the sheer amount of material he was writing and trying out is incredible. Not to mention rearranging and cutting up with every one of 'em.

this struck me most when watching it. i can't even fathom writing so much material, spending months on just one song, and then ending up happy with just 10. it really gave me a greater appreciation for the album.

kinda makes you want to assemble your own version of darkness from the vast pool of songs it was created. as tallent said, his sequence was entirely different. i've actually written to e street radio asking to do this for "be the boss", but...

I watched this at about 1:30 AM when, after the baby got up, and he and the wife went back to sleep, I was wide awake.

This is The Church of Rock And Roll. I agree with Ben that I could hear Bruce wax poetic on it forever.

I wish I had a time machine that would make them put The Promise on here, instead of Adam Raised A Cain, and for some reason, watching them demo Factory, really made me like that song all the more.

for true. never liked "factory", but have come to love it as a consequence of this documentary, which has also resulted in "racing in the streets" as one of my favourite songs ever. (the version on "the promise" release ain't that hot though.)

i need to find a bootleg of the darkness show i saw at giants stadium a year ago...

So...is it just me that missed the memo, or did anyone else not know that they were releasing a self-standing disc of "The Promise":

This will hold me over until Santa potentially brings me the big kahuna.

$$99 for the 3LP. Cheaper on Amazon. Purchased today on the strength of these low qual mp3s, which I'm summarily deleting in anticipation of the real thing.

This sort of reminds me of Tracks in that there are some definite hidden jewels but then some other stuff that is more "E Street by numbers" where I think Bruce was working through several idea to get to one.

The difference is that this shit sounds fantastic, really beefy. Does the remastered album sound this good? I've always thought that despite it's greatness, Darkness was very thin and lacked a little punch sonically.

totally agree! another interesting thing to me is that there's very little resemblance between the promise and darkness outtakes, which i also love. i'd like to know more on the backstory of that release. from what i understand, there was fairly significant rerecording or overdubs done to these promise tracks, and that with the mixing and mastering is probably making for beef.

i haven't heard the remastered darkness, but would love to.

I'm totally facking loving this thing. I always felt that evil ol' Big Business Inc. ripped off the world by denying us that one Springsteen album based in the joy of his success (in other words, the follow-up to Born to Run), and instead that entire period was deleted by court battles and Springsteen subsequently skipped straight to the rueful skepticism of Darkness. But shit, here we are and here it is. I crammed it onto a single disc, omitted a couple of the turgid ballads, and the fucker glows in the dark.
