Just learned this one: John Lydon is Ari Up's step-father.

Yes, Chip Davis from Omaha wrote the song, but was not "C.W. McCall" who performed it. That was a dude whose last name was Fries. He and his dog Sloan (named after the town of Sloan, Iowa) used to stay in my parents' motel. I still have pictures of me with Sloan the dog.

Was that song related to the movie Convoy with Kris Kristoffersen? I saw that when I was a kid.

Yes, it was. The song was such a hit that they made a movie based on it.

Just came across this bizarre little tidbit last night...

Liza Minelli sang backing vocals on Alice Cooper's "Teenage Lament '74."

The entirety of the 70s is only explainable through the prism of Cheap Scag and Ass Sex.

Cymbal Hate:

Joe Pernice doesn't like to record cymbals. Kate Bush wanted to make her Hounds of Love album without cymbals. Annie Clark (St. Vincent) doesn't like cymbals. Chris Cester (Jet) doesn't care for them too much. Nora Jones drummer says that "Nora's not really into cymbals". A guy who tuned drums for a famous loud guitar / drums duo told me he's not too fond of them. I've never found cymbals I've liked to play. The only good cymbal sounds in live music, to me, have been in jazz. There are some great recorded rock rides and crashes, though. Hi-hats are good, though.

I agree. Cymbals are the white noise of the drum kit. They belong at the end of a fill, or as an unexpected accent to a beat... but the minute the rhythmic timekeeping stroke moves from the hi-hat to a crash, I'm done.

WOW! Quite the combo, indeed.

TIL (damn you Reddit) that Maya Rudolph from Saturday Night Live and Idiocracy fame was once a Rental, as in Matt Sharp's post Weezer outfit. You can catch glimpses of her in the Waiting video.

And along these lines, Peter Gabriel wouldn't let Phil Collins or Jerry Marotta use cymbals on the "Melt" album.

The melting effect for that album cover was done by taking a pencil eraser to a Polaroid picture, while it was still drying/developing. Not sure how many they ruined trying to get the effect just right.
