I guess if Bloor and Kimgfiskb are both on this Free Energy bandwagon, I should hear it again. Another one I lumped in with the dogfuckers.

It's pretty interesting to see the Harlem at the top of your list, definitely has some good hooks going on. I lean towards the more dirtier side of garage rock i guess, i think this straddles the border between garage and indie rock or at least a poppier side.

I'd like to hear that Soft Pack record sometime.

Just couldn't get into that Parting Gifts record, i should be all over it because of Cartwright but I'm not too keen on her.

Cool list.

It's not something you wanna overthink; I mean, I've compared them (favorably) to early Weezer for chrissakes.

I looked around for an Ariel Pink link but couldnt find one I was comfortable with: Somebody point me in the right direction?

It's weird, I couldn't even get through Free Energy. Maybe I was in a shitty mood that day, it's happened before.

Nice list Kingfish.

That Free Energy will be in my top 5. It was summer's soundtrack from '79 reconstituted.

I really like the Free Energy album but I can definitely get why some people don't like it. They're basically a re-hash of a thousand other bands but it works for me. Like Bloor, I hear early Weezer as well as some Big Star and Thin Lizzy here and there. That one will be in my top-5 for sure.

Jerkass, I'm really looking forward to seeing your list. When I find out your #1 pick, I'm going to turn your girlfriend/wife into a dirty dishrag (all holes) while listening to it, that way you'll always have fond memories of it.

nothing personal, it's just something that needs to be done.

this has nothing to do with yogurt. or over enthusiasm for an over-polished brit-rock outfit from eight months ago... or skate parks...or what you ate for dinner... or your spouse's used and abused axe gash...or anything else that fills up your microcosm of subclinical mania.

i enjoy the jest, but really,
like the lazy kid in a learning disabled class,
he/she might not be retarded, but she's still surrounded by them.
i'm just gonna settle in and watch everyone else eat pudding and peanut butter.

B+ for content, B- for form.

You might try a sensibility not decades old, and less sit-com realia trotted out to placehold and divert from the content. Also, think of anglo-saxon roots not latinate multi-syllables.

Has anyone verified that Jerkass is not, in fact, catswilleatyou? There are about four of these guys from various points in Western 'Sconnie/Twin Cities area, posting to Obner, all the same way. Might it be multipersonality disorder, or, at least, a Keith Thornton style predilection to character creation?

I'd assume that he's not cats simply because cats always seemed more easy-going and tactful than this.

But who knows, maybe Jerkass is cats' douchebag alter-ego where he gets to act like a butthurt 12-year-old.

Or the multiple personality disorder thing.

Or that's what he'd have us believe.

Seriously, though, I think he was the dude who was (is?) in med school.

I like it just fine, but it's not going in my Top 20. It's just a fun, cheesy cock-rock record that would be great to throw on at a booze and coke-fueled college party.

This.

I actually gave it a shot. Your instincts were correct.

I've been listening to it all morning. Put it this way: the album should be packaged with four oven mits, a roll of duct tape and a jar of peanut butter.

It just moved up five places on my year end list because of this post.

So many are saying "why is this good, why do I like this... what the hell is it?" I saw him two weeks ago live.... it's exemplifies the foundation of all this rock and roll addiction that's carried on now for 60 years... damaged and fearful psyches saved by the love of music. "Ain't there one damn song that can make me break down ad cry...." And that exemplification is constantly looking for a new way to attain "release" each new epoch, market trend, demographic shift, self-satisfaction.... rude boy, rude boy. The man who sold the world indeed.
