Modern English - After The Snow : Yeah, it had that one big hit. I don't know if it was SUPER HUGE (like MJ was) back then (only went to # 7 on the Billboard) but it seems like "I Melt With You" is one of the more memorable songs of the era and has stuck around for almost 30 years now. But anyway, the whole LP is worthy checking out, if only for the queasy mesh of post-punk and pop.

From Allmusic:

Quote:
The former's seemingly mannered singing actually shows a remarkable fluidity at points -- "After the Snow" again is a good reference point, as is the fraught, slow-burn epic "Dawn Chorus" -- while McDowell works around the band's various arrangements instead of trying to dominate them. Some songs, like "Face of Wood," even find Modern English -- often dogged with Joy Division comparisons early on -- predicting where New Order would go before that band got there itself.

I can't imagine that anyone here hasn't heard it. Still, it was 1982 and, if you haven't heard it: a) you're probably the only one; b) you should definitely remedy that.

I agree with that Modern English being another fine album that more or less gets lost in the shuffle due to containing the one mega-hit that for most overshadowed what was a solid album all the way through. I may also throw Icicle Works into that category. Now, I am going to have to leave this genre before I start getting like Billyg and listening to Haircut 100. It's only a short, slippery slope now to Big Country and the Thompson Twins or even Fun Boy Three.
