I've been pondering this as well.

Also, I can't believe that we still post here.

What's to ponder? While I have countless albums that have hit between the eyes upon first listen, I also have countless that were much more subtle and required I live with them for a while. Spend time in the car, in the house, cold weather, warm weather.

I just found it preposterous to give 400 new albums 2-3 cursory listens (at most) and then set parameters on them for historical context, innovation, etc. and then rank them. Also, there were claims of still going back and listening to old albums while engaging in this herculean task.

I'm not sure what else you'd call it. It's certainly not a visceral exercise.

I'm not picking on your thoughts, just pondering the idea that there mere act of listening to music would require any intellectualization.

I remember I joined CMJ sometime in 2002 in the midst of a mix exchange, in which I participated at the last minute. To all of you hoarders of CMJ/obner memorabilia, please destroy said mix if you still have it. Thx.

What about Hypertime McMultiverse and his brief attempt at board domination... one of my favorite board quotes ever was his "Oh I think I'll be sticking around for awhile" about a week before he stopped posting altogether. Second favorite might be Loog declaring that Obama had no chance of winning early during the primaries.

This seems to be an invitation of sorts.

I'm not trolling for a fight, I just remember it and it makes me chuckle. He's not wrong very often - not about that stuff.

Nice backhanded compliment ;)

I think it was BLOOR who pushed that notion, and I helped him champion it - because though he shills for no one, I often shill for him.

All in all there have been some extremely funny shit written down here. I suppose that's why I kept coming back. The board reminds of this friend I used to have who had little redeeming qualities and the only reason I maintained the friendship because he could be terrifically funny at times. When the the banal/funny ratio got lopsided, I stopped hanging out with him.

I absolutely did not. Although I should clarify, we didn't hang out as much anymore due to geography but I stopped calling the guy to check in and more or less just atrophied the friendship. He's better off without me as a friend as I clearly wasn't a very good one.

I think it's "critical" not "intellectual" that's meant. And Lee Ving spitting at a crowd is, in a sense, a critical context. And there've been plenty of spitting attempts over the years here. Less volume in the projectile fluid as the spirit of Obner declines.
