4. Ben Gibbard

i'm amazed to see him on so many lists, his lyrics are pretty trite

"I am thinking it's a sign
that the freckles in our eyes
are mirror images and when we kiss
they're perfectly aligned"

Oh, baby, he's so esteemed in our 'community' because we so emotive, baby. We are indie-rock listeners who came up, and of age (by and large), at the turn of the willenium, and at such time, the indie-rock, college-rock of the moment was Jade Tree and Vagrant fronted. Lots of Jets to Brazil then, some Get-up Kids, a little Joan d'Arc for good measure -- oh baby, oh baby....

This is sarcasm?

what the fuck are you on about?

yeah i'm still on the lookout for a good defense of gibbard and oberst. try omitting "good at conveying emotion" from the equation and you're left without much to really praise.

folks i look up to:
joe pernice
stuart murdoch
craig finn
chuck d
mr. tweedy
andrew bird (at times)
matt kadane
guy piciotto

folks that intimidate me (not that the above don't):
stephin merritt
malkmus
beck
bobby d!
stuart murdoch :)

also, i appreciate the hell out of jonathan richman. despite being full of great turns of phrase and revealing moments of emotion, he still retains a real simple, pleasant, and obviously humorous style and delivery...

that's all i got right now, but damn, i spend *a lot* of my days thinking about this.

I quite like that Postal Service album which I quoted from, but he's far from a good lyricist. Don't even get me started on Oberst.

So now I hang out down by the train's depot
No, I don’t ride, I just sit and watch the people there
They remind me of wind-up cars in motion
They way they spin and turn and jockey for positions
And I wanna scream out that it all is nonsense
Their life’s one track and can’t they see it’s pointless?
But just then my knees give under me
My head feels weak and suddenly
It’s clear to see, it’s not them, but me
Who’s lost my self-identity
And I hide behind these books I read
While scribbling my poetry
Like art could save a wretch like me
With some ideal ideology
That no one could hope to achieve
And I'm never real, it's just a sketch of me
And everything I’ve made is trite and cheap and a waste
Of paint
Of tape
Of time

So I park my car down by the cathedral
Where the floodlights point up at the steeples
Choir practice is filling up with people
I hear the sound escaping as an echo
Sloping off the ceiling at an angle
When the voices blend they sound like angels
I hope there’s some room still in the middle
But when lift my voice up now to reach them
The range is too high way up in heaven
So I hold my tongue, forget the song
Tie my shoes, start walking off
And try to just keep moving on
With my broken heart and my absent god
And I have no faith but it’s all I want
To be loved
And believe
In my soul, in my soul

Well, I'm not sure whether I necessarily have a good defense, but the prime examples that come to mind of what I consider quality Gibbard lyrics are "Styrofoam Plates" and "We Looked Like Giants." I'm certainly no musician myself, so it's definitely not an expert opinion, but I like what I hear lyrically in those two songs. Sure, he's got some silly ones, as well ("Title and Registration," anyone?), but I think his good significantly outweighs his bad overall.

Great minds think alike.

I like a lot of the folks listed above.

I can honestly say that DBT is the only band today that I constantly read and reread their lyrics when i get the new album.

jp:DBT - "Zip City"
np: Bright Eyes - "Another Travelin' Song"

Hands down, David Bazan.

Also, Thank God that no one has mentioned Maynard yet?... Tool hasn't made the list, so far, correct?

Since I'm too lazy to read the whole thread, I'm gonna put forth a name I haven't seen yet. Maybe not the best ever, but for a while I really winted to be:
Paul Westerberg

Others that are pretty great:
Jay Farrar
Jeff Tweedy
RAY FUCKING DAVIES!!!!!

I'll be the first to defend Bright Eyes. I get sick of him relatively quickly but the lyrics to the above song are quite good if you ask me.

Some of my all-time favorites:

Dylan
Tweedy
Rhett Miller
John K. Samson
Thom York
Elliot Smith

Good call, Jason! I'll have to bump JV from my list to include Kozelek, just for Sun Kil Moon alone.
