Yea, I have no idea who to keep, if anyone. I think that we should be able to find out what round we'd be losing prior to locking in our keepers.

I agree with Nacho. And I thought we voted to start keepers next season.

So email you with the names of players we're considering keeping so you can let us know what they'd cost?

And how did you come up with the draft order, by the way?

At this point, my impression is that Monty's keeper rules are pretty much based on Monty's whims. Why else be so cagey?

I'm guessing keepers for people who have finished strongly in the past few years are going to be more expensive than keepers for people who haven't. I don't like that idea out of principal - if we're making a wager on this (CD prize), everyone should be on a level playing field (except for draft order - I don't have a problem with lower finishing teams drafting higher). This reeks of "everyone should have a chance to finish first, so let's give some people an advantage." At the very least, this is the kind of thing a league should get to vote on.

it seems to me everyone is voting no on the keepers, or at least are impartial. Except Monty.

Also, without a Util slot, players like David Ortiz and Travis Hafner aren't in the game. I'd like to see one added.

Utility added.

& as to keepers being a ploy to let everyone have a chance to finish first, I think Timmy is the exemplar of that fallacy. He didn't start winning 'til going hands-off/auto-drafting exclusively. Where he picked had nothing to do it. Who was available when had nothing to do with it.

For the record, I had one season of autodraft, which I think was season before last where I came in 8th? (need to check the records but don't care to.) Last season, I think I came into the draft late, maybe 3 or 4 rounds in.

I started winning when I stopped drafting Reds and putting my favorite players on my team. I went out of my way to keep emotion out of it.

I'm not in favor of keepers for this league. I think before anything gets done it should be put to a vote.

I like the idea of keepers since the league has been together, in roughly its current configuration, for a few years now. We know, or are starting to know, how we tick, what goes into building our teams; our proclivities, our obsessions... So, to further the continuity, a keeper or two -- or zero; mind you, I never said anyone has to assign her/himself keepers -- is not a bad idea.

Implementing a rule that never got voted on to allow some teams to have (multiple) keepers, because they have players worth keeping, while allowing others to not be required to have keepers, because they don't have anyone they value high enough to keep, to keep it fair doesn't seem to make any sense.

Or maybe they don't want to keep anyone. Maybe, regardless the caliber of the preceding year's team, they want to start fresh.

To each one's own.

Plus, it's not some -- it's all. The 1-2 keepers per team applies to all (save those opting out).

Doesn't "some" fall into the range of "all, minus those opting out?"

My point is that you can't start a keeper league without announcing the switch to a keeper league prior to the start of the season preceding the selection of the keepers. People might have made tactical moves during last season to plan for this years keepers.

True. But your previous remarks seemed to indicate I had crafted this with only some in mind. I meant & mean for all owners to be able to make use of the ability to keep a player or two from the preceding year. There was no "some" in my intent (even if I specified an owner could abstain ('0 keepers')).

Here's what I think this all comes down to - just because you're the commish doesn't mean you can jam a rule change down everyone's throat. And then on top of that, implement the new rule change in a less than fully transparent way.

You did craft it with some in mind because not all have the chance to keep players that were on their roster at some point last year if they dropped them not knowing about the optional keepers this year. To create a level playing field, rule changes that are based on the preceding year's roster need to be announced/ agreed upon/ implemented PRIOR to said year. Rules that only affect the upcoming season are fine to change before the season.

This. That is, unless everyone is 100% on board with a change that will affect the upcoming season. We don't have that here. Not even close.

But, if we drop keepers for this year, can we have them next year?

I already see in Pape's comments reticence to the idea.

I am okay with either way but I see the point people are making. The best way to start the keeper league stuff would probably be everyone knowing about it going into the draft for this season and then picking keepers next year.

Yes, I'm all for keepers next year. Just not this year.
