yeah its really up to the states. i happen to live in a state with a doctor for a governor who already pushed for health care reform at the state level..insurance exchanges are going to go live very soon. most other states have probably been sitting around waiting they wouldnt have to deal with it.

as far as the complexity, hopefully some bureaucrats in the agencies can sit down and write some reasonable regs to implement the statute. then we'll get a couple decades of case law to interpret everything. haha.

I think it's great that a lot of this is being left up to the states (Federalism!); Vermont, for example, is using this as an opportunity to implement a single payer system. For other states, that may not be the best course, but there has to be some sort of minimum standard, right?

Of course, like so many things, the only people to benefit from any of this will be the lawyers.

One of two great points you've made in this thread. The other being that our federal legislative body is broken.

As someone who works alternatively with 2 state governments and the federal government, all I want to say is I thought the federal government was fucked up until I started working with state governments. The feds are on the fucking ball compared to the fucktards at state level.

Obviously some states are different, but that has been my experience in Missouri and Illinois.

Our state government is all mutants, monsters and people who couldn't pass the "trainables" test to bag groceries at Publix.

Which is hilarious because I'm sure that to a man (and woman) they A) despise the government B) think that the state pension system will bankrupt the entire world and C) curse "lazy government workers and all their perks"

This is what a 50 year campaign AGAINST the government reaps.

I wonder if they plowed half the "$550B tax increase" of this thing into deficit reduction if anyone would even begin to reconsider the measures?

The problems with federal and state gov't, the legislative body at the national level, and the law as it's written don't make me wish I'd gotten nothing instead. And "nothing" is the only viable alternative today, here, in this reality. It's fun to wish or pretend otherwise, but frankly to have gotten as much as we did is a miracle, and will actually help at least a little bit. I'll take "something" in 2012 over "nothing" in 2012, and we'll see what the fuck happens afterwards.

Just got this rant after a little prodding over email from a "friend":

Quote:
Hey everyone,

I just wanted to follow up on our conversation. You might think this is obnoxious of me but I am adamant about people staying informed about what their government is doing. Although I was wrong in saying that the flex accounts are ending, Obamacare does limit the amount a family (of any number of children) can put in an account every year to $2500 (there is no limit today). Obamacare also restricts what you can purchase with these funds. The point is that numerous families (especially those with cronic illnesses and childhood disabilities) will see a huge increase in their taxes--this was the point--the democrats used these new taxes to help fund the health care.

Also, you all said Obamacare does not apply to insurance plans outside of the government. That is completely wrong--Obamacare applies to every health care plan--which is why the Catholic Church and Catholic universities such as Notre Dame are suing b/c Obamacare forces them to pay for their employees' birth control and abortifacents.

Finally, you all should know that your premiums are going to go up. Under Obamacare, insurance companies are no longer allowed to charge higher premiums for people who are older and sicker. Therefore, in order for an insurance company to be able to afford paying medical bills, younger and healthier people will see their premiums rise dramatically. Finally, there will be many people who decide not to get health insurance and just pay the penalty (or tax), which will be extremely cheaper than a health insurance premium, especially for those who are younger and healthier. And by requiring insurance companies to accept preexisting conditions, one need only pay the small penalty, wait to get sick, and then buy health insurance. (This is like having your house burn down, then buying fire insurance, and then requiring the insurance company to reimburse you for your losses). Anyway, so the many healthy people who will opt out of the system and pay the penalty will mean that premiums must go up again to cover the doctor bills of the old and sick, who, as I said before, cannot be charged a higher premium than you and I (who are young and healthy).

All of this information is available online. You do not have to take my word for it. Please do your own research. It is blatantly unfair for us to take money from our children and grandchildren so that we can live the high life today.

So...

First young healthy people ARE paying for insurance and it's going to get more expensive,

and then

Young and healthy people AREN'T paying for it, they're just going to pay the "tax" and live without insurance.
