Didn't know so many Obner's are living in the area. I'm moving there in August to go to Tufts for the graduate program at the Fletcher School. It's a bit selfish, but I'm glad that I wasn't living there already when all of this happened. My wife is Korean, so she's knows almost nothing about Boston, and finally decided that we would be moving to Boston a few days before all of this happened, so this is her introduction the city. Her family was like, are you sure it's safe there.

Oh, Mr Hand, Where Were You When Boston Needed You Most?

(Thought about this today, unrelated to the events of last Monday, but... Well....)

Cool, thanks for the offer. I've never been to Boston, or North of D.C even, so I have no idea where to look. My friend who lives up there is telling me that Somerville near Davis Square is the best place, but that's all I have to go on for now. I got the feeling that there are lots of bigger houses for like 3-5 students to share, but I need something smaller and somewhat cheap for just me and my wife. Any advice about where to look would be appreciated. Since you offered, I might hit you up again for advice closer to August.

I know it was just all over the news, but Watertown is pretty nice and relatively cheap compared to the rest of the city. Only drawback is there's no subway line that goes out there. Somerville is good too. Stay away from Allston, though lower Allston isn't too bad. Same for Brighton. I live in Jamaica Plain and I love it but it can be a pain to get to sometimes.

In the area you will look, 1 BRs are maybe $1400, 2 BRs $1800-$2200. Around Porter Sq there are tons of big houses that many students share, but that is obviously not what you want.

If you want a deal, look for East Arlington. Walkable to the red line (Alewife stop) or quick bus to both Alewife and Harvard. You can get half of a 2 family for ~$1500. That is what we are likely to do. I will mostly bike to work, school, very bike friendly.

What Wilked said. Rents are very steep here, worse than just about everywhere but San Fran. And Wilked good deal with the bike plan. We're pretty plugged in to the bike scene here so lemme know if you have any questions and such. Out thattaway is also the Minuteman Trail, which is (I believe) the most popular dedicated rail-to-trail in the US...? It goes from out near Lincoln all the way in to the end of the Red Line at Alewife.

Hi, thanks to everyone who has given some advice so far. We don't have a car, and don't want to get one at least at first so we are limited to places near a subway stop. I figure no matter what, it's going to be expensive to live there, but the other schools I got into were in D.C. which were even crazier for living costs. I'll look into the neighborhoods people suggested. I'll probably hit the board up for good stuff to do in the Boston area when it's closer to the move.

I will second that emotion - you do NOT want a car here. Not only do you not need it with Zipcar all over the place here, but it is an active pain in the ass to insure / fix / park / drive a vehicle anywhere near Boston.

As for Watertown, Shiv is right, it's a pretty nice, safe place when murdering terrorists aren't lobbing grenades in it. And it's served by the 71 bus line, which is a nice straight shot into Harvard Square and the Red Line every 7 minutes almost all day. There is good food (Deluxe Town Diner), a big grocery store (Shaws), and rents are better. I imagine you'd wind up in half one a 2-story house, and share a yard with another family.
