Really? I love the Constantines, and have listened to samples of the National. Never a full track. I didn't notice that. Which track of the new National should I download?

I've struggled to find a good RIYL for The National, but The Constantines are the most similar act that I am familiar with (I've only heard Shine a Light, though).

Their site has several mp3 samples, as does Insound:

So would an amateur fishstick taste like chicken and its batter always fall off onto the plate?

RIYL for love as laughter? (please?)

i can't really narrow down my top 2 right now, that requires too much thinking for me at the moment... but i really like these releases:

spoon- gimme fiction
of montreal- the sunlandic twins
doves- some cities
brendan brenson- alternative to love
bloc party- silent alarm
boom bip- blue eyed in the red room
low- the great destroyer

something like that.

As for Spoon, I can see Gimme Fiction making my Top 10 at the end of the year, but probably not quite my Top 5.

You must not rank this high among Spoon albums then I assume.

Maximilian Hecker is still my #1. I'm not really sure what would be my number 2. Still tons I haven't heard.

RIYL - A sloppier looser strokes. At least that's the way I hear it. But not really in a garage revival kinda way. That's probably no help. I am the absolute worse when it comes to describing music.

Right now I think Spoon and Okkervil River are my top two. Not sure in which order though.

Most overrated album of the year = Bloc Party - Silent Alarm.

Tanner, I am intrigued by what you say and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter

I always thought "Sea to Shining Sea", their last one, sounded like Dreamday Nation era Sonic Youth (noisy, upbeat art punk and the singer does sound a bit like Thurston Moore to my ears)...haven't heard the new one. Is it a departure in sound/style cause Sea to Shining Sea doesn't bring strokes to mind at all for me?

np: BT Express "Do It Til You're Satisfied"

I haven't heard their earlier stuff. But from what I've read it sounds like it is a bit of a departure. Most reviews says that the band has retreated to a more songwriter focus. I find the 2nd half a little more intresting than the first. This is off of 3-4 listens at work.

"Sea to Shining Sea" was much noisier and more upbeat than the new one. I've only listened to the new one twice, but it's not as good as "Sea to Shining Sea" stylistically to me, though the songs themselves may be just as good.

Sorry I can't narrow this down to 2, but these are the best 2005 things I've bought:

Angels of Light - Sing "Other People"
Antony & The Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Matt Sweeney - Superwolf
Low - The Great Destroyer

These seem really good, but I'm waiting to listen more when I get real copies:

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Need New Body - (?)
Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to Love
