I may get slammed for this but I partly agree with Cruise regarding his take on the "medicating of America."
He's got no business telling Brooke Shields what is the best way to deal with her problems. However, he is right on target with his concern that popping a pill is not always the answer. I don't freakin' think Scientology is the answer either, but he is right in suggesting that all this is a bit Brave New World-ish.
Feeling down? Here take this
Low on energy? Try this one
Anger issues? Maybe this will do the trick
Hyperactive? Take the blue, then the green
Doctors are passing this stuff out like candy.
Also, I'm no hypocrite. I can find fault with this situation but realize that I'm part of the problem because I'M on a ton of shit. If I don't have my fuckitol every day I'm a freakin' mess.
Also, I know firsthand that most people who are on this stuff are not being monitored properly. Consultations with my first 2 doctors consisted of them asking me how I was feeling and then writing the prescription. In and out of the office in 5-10 minutes. It was not until my third try that I found a doctor who had the hands on approach that I wanted.
I don't know what the answer is and I'm damn sure that Cruise doesn't have it, but I just wanted to say that I can partially see his point.
The issue I have with Cruise's ranting is that he never makes a viable point. He just keeps saying it's wrong and he knows more about it then anyone and then never backs up exactly what is and why it is wrong.
Yes, overmedicating is rampant. Yes there are doctors out there who will diagnose you with some paxil before really finding out if say for instance that you just suffered some trauma that could really just use some awesome therapy or a good bottle of gin.
But as a parent that watched their child suffer for years and all normal ways of coping and trying to solve those problems were exhausted until he went on a cocktail that is VERY closely watched, I can say that sometimes medicating can be the right solution.
Most of you know what I went through and how traumatic it was, and all I can say is I no longer have a child that is overly obsessive, highly anxious, a danger to himself and others and lives a happy, normal existence. My son's self esteem has skyrocketed, he now has lots of friends, plays in sports, excels at school and is adjusted at home and in other social situations. The drugs help him, not hinder him. NOW, he DID originally start out on Ritalin and THAT DID fuck him up a bit worse. And I curse the doctors whose care he was under at the time. But his current group of docs are fabulous and well, I would love to one day see him off of them, and slowly but surely we will do that.
I'm just saying that Cruise is an egomaniac who doesn't have a fucking clue about the real world out there and he needs to shut the hell up. I found him annoying before, now I just think he's a complete moron and needs some therapy himself to find out why he thinks he's God.
