as for leetch, did he really deserve 4 mil for 1 year? weak move by oconnel if you ask me, i hope we get modano, but not if hes gonna get a stupid contract like leetch, signing thornton and samsonov to long term deals should be priority #1

They needed a 1 year fix until some kids can step in. They have some solid future blueliners. 4mil is a bit steep but is Thorton asking for 7mil any better? I'm shocked Leetch signed a 1 year deal guys his age usually demand years not money. Chances are they could've had him for less but been on the hook for a multi year deal.

Modano just signed in Dallas. Brisebois & Pierre Turgeon jump ship to the AV's.

So far this has been my favorite tracker http://www2.sportsnet.ca/nhl/free_agent_tracker.html
and I love CBC for trade analysis. TSN is solid too but I've seen mistakes in thier tracker

Glad to see Modano remain a Star, though his career is most definitely on the wane.

I can't fucking believe ANY hockey team, NHL or even IHL, thinks Turd-geon is worthy of a roster spot. He may have been great once, but he's 100% suck these days!!!

Agree. I'm a Panthers fan. If these vets mix in with the kids ( Weiss , Boumeester , Horton ) we should be pretty respectable.

Either way , this year should be exciting and with no more ties and with shootouts on the way , you gotta be pumped.

Dallas miscast him on the 3rd line. They should've put Arnott as a RW, he's too weak defensively to be a center.

If Damphousse doesn't return, Turgeon is a lock to get 60 points.

Philly is way over the cap (if you factor in their RFAs- notably Esche and Gagne). In addition to trading Roenick, I think they're gonna have to deal a couple more guys if they want to have any kind of cap space to add a couple guys at the trade deadline during the season. It will be interesting to see how Bobby Clarke pulls this one off...

And to fill their need for a #1 defenseman the Sabres dig deep into their pockets to sign.........

.......Teppo Numinnen.

If this were 1995, that would be pretty sweet, but umm... not so much in 2005.

They've said their budget will be at about 30 mil, and without Satan and Zhitnik, they should be way below that. Maybe they don't consider Teppo to fill their #1 D need, but they've already got a slew of players to fill out the bottom of their D-core. How many #3 defensemen do you need?

ugh.

Eklund reported it as done but that's just a rumour site & that was long enough ago it should be up. I'm sure they're talking to him. As far as 2nd line centers left out there he might be the best choice other than Damphousse.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bruins jump in on Roenick since they wanted him as a UFA & he could be a 2nd line center if they don't get Zhamnov. I'm sure Pho & LA are low balling Clarke knowing he has to dump him & he's 36 in Jan, has serious injury history, & is making over $4m

Spacek & Lapointe to Blackhawks. As long as Chi-town doesn't expect 20+ goals a year they'll love Lapointe. He stick's up for teammates, has great locker room presence, is a stud along the boards & has 2 rings. Spacek is a decent puck handling defenceman who isn't as scary in his own end as Berard.

Niedermayer to ANA. This might be the Summers biggest signing because of Forsbergs injury history. Eventhough I'm a casual Devils fan & hate hate hate the Ducks I like the fact Scott came here to play with his brother. Well his brother & $27m over 4 years. This takes a lot of 5 on 5 ice time away from Ozolinsh, which'll help & still gives them an awesome 1-2 punch on the blueline for the PP. Any deal for Bertuzzi here now would have to include major salary sheding on the Ducks end. Sykora ($3m) & prospects? Sykora & Ozolinsh ($2.75m) would pretty much equal Bertuzzi's numbers. The Ducks are loaded with hot prospects, Bobby Ryan, Correy Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Ladislav Smid

Teppo Numminen a Sabre. Someone on this board is in Buffalo. Have you heard anything about them trying to get Buffalo born Aaron Miller from the Kings? He's still under contract but I heard they want him. Just wondering if you've heard anything & if it's a source other than Eklund

The Buffalo paper has speculated that the Sabres might try to trade Aaron Miller (who is a Buffalo native). Not sure how I really feel about that as a fan, though I haven't followed him very closely. From what I know, his injury history isn't very good and he's more of a defensive defensman anyway, which doesn't do much in terms of filling their needs. He's onthe expensive side, too. After signing Teppo, I'm not sure they'd go after another D-man, unless they gave one up in return.

Roenick a King for future considerations.

"The Flyers have a better chance of winning the Cup with Peter Forsberg than with Jeremy Roenick"
You gotta love a guy who's that brutally honest.

I like it because Taylor gave up nothing right now & if Roenick is hurt they don't lose out on compensation & they're out from his contract next Summer. And if he's healthy he's a top 6er on a team that needs 2. Roenick is a quality guy & the hockey illiterate So Cal media (sans Helene Elliot & Matt McHale) will be forced to pay attention at a time when hockey needs it.

I figured I was the only Sabres fan on the board. As Buffalo natives go I'd rather have Marchant than Aaron Miller but I believe he's signed for awhile (CBJ). It seems kinda odd that all these teams are signing up FA's to fat contracts right after the cap was established. Makes me wonder if these signings are only to help sell tickets to bring the fans back....

Never would have thought there was such hockey interest here and pretty knowledgeable shit too. Colour me surprised.

Flyers and Oilers have to be considered the big winners in this madness so far. Peca and Pronger are brilliant pick-ups for a team that will thrive under the newest "crackdown on obstruction". I hope it lasts. And the Flyers have to be favorites to come out of the East, though Esche is a question mark. But they have a young Finnish stud who's supposed to be their best goalie right now!

I'm a Habs fan and am pretty underwhelmed by their moves so far. Khovalev only plays when he feels like it, I do like what ended up being a Dandenault for Brisebois trade, but they still need another #1 or 2 defenceman. Rafalski would have looked nice, but the Devils have re-signed him. They do have some good young prospects who could be ready to contribute (Perezhogin, Higgins, Plekanec, Kostitsyn), but without another big signing like Paul Kariya perhaps, they're middle of the pack at best.

Some of the singings, especially the length of contracts leaves me curious..five years for Rathje and Modano, what if the cap goes down in the coming years, some teams are really going to be stuck. I guess in Philly they'll hide their mistakes by buying out players, but a team like Edmonton into Pronger for 5 years is curious to say the least.

Should be an interesting season.

The Stars are gonna get it handed to them. They just signed Madano for another five years and he's already 35. I miss Hatcher already...

Tie Domi stays a Leaf for Two years, $2.5 million? That is pretty cheap, compared to what some guys are getting.

Don't you worry about that, Nacho, the Flyers have consulted Joe Banner of the NFL Eagles regarding how to work the cap. Banner is one of the best cap salary experts. They'll be fine.

By the way, the Forsberg to Philly deal was quite a shocker. I wasn't even expecting them to sign a forward. Their whole off-season plan was to stock up on defensemen.

I was glad when they passed on Todd Marchant and let Columbus sign him for more than he's worth. The Buff paper says they're still looking for another D-man, which isn't a horrible idea, but I'd really like to see them get a top-3 forward. Why they wouldn't go after Kariya (when supposedly Edmonton's offer is for about 2 mil per year) is beyond me.

With all those young forwards (Roy, Vanek, Pyatt, Connolly) it's so hard to predict how competitive they'll be. Without adding a top forward, I predict they'll miss the playoffs again, but if a couple of the young guys come through, they could surprise.

I'd be really surprised to see Kariya sign with an Eastern Conf. team. Kariya is gun-shy ever since he got clocked by Suter, I don't think he'd relish playing in the more physical East. Having said all that, I'm still holding out hope that the Habs will sign him.

There are still some pretty interesting forwards out there...Palfy, Lidros, Perreault.

Nikolai Khabibulin a Blackhawk 4 years $27m
Blackhawks have landed 2 really solid 3rd line grinders who bring a ton of character in Lapointe (& Barnaby last summer) 2 top 4 defenceman in Spacek & Aucoin & the goalie with the newest ring on his finger. It's all for not if Wirtz won't televise home games.

East conf physical play vs Western conf physical play is so overrated, 15-20 years ago when the Adams had those 2 smaller ice surfaces & the Patrick was built on grinders yeah it was a different game than what the Oilers were doing with Gretzky, Coffey, Kurri & co out West. But today it's different. Hell by the time Messier landed on Broadway the rest of the East was going nuts trying to land Calgary's Joel Otto. I doubt players are measuring the physical play when weighing offers. St Louis, Koivu, Samsonov, Gionta are all small & exceling in the East. Paul is definately gun shy & it's affected his numbers but an offense like Edmonton would favor him. What Kariya wants is somewhere he doesn't have to play on a defence first team so the Oilers offer makes sense to him right now even if it's not a big offer. Ironically the Ducks would make sense too but they can't afford him.

He's never been a solid 2way guy which is okay when you & your linemate are 2-3 in scoring, but now coaches demand he contribute without scoring & he acts like he's still putting up 1995 numbers when in fact he's a 20 goal guy skating 15 minutes a night. But his rep as a guy who's signed 4 contracts 2 of which required holdouts, 1 of which made him one of the leagues richest & a 4th which he took a big paycut to be in this position as a UFA you wonder if he won't go for the payday again. I think he'll go for style of play & land in EDM.
